  3. During this session, we will… • Review MPHA’s 2016 Legislative Priorities • Recap the 2016 Legislative Session • Discuss opportunities for future public health advocacy with Representative Bernardy and Commissioner Musicant

  4. MPHA2016 Legislative Priorities • Support Gun Violence Prevention efforts • Support Vaccine Education and Promotion efforts • Support a $6 million investment in for Safe Routes to School infrastructure • Support a statewide comprehensive multi-modal transportation package that includes significant new funding for active transportation • Maintain Statewide Health Improvement Program funding

  5. 2016 Legislative Recap: Session of Inaction?NEEDS TO BE UPDATED Success: • SHIP funding was not targeted for cuts! No action taken this session: • Universal background check bill (S.F. 2493) • Gun violence protective order bill (S.F. 2980) Still in Play: • Strengthened physical education standards (?) • Good Food Access Fund (?) • Active transportation funding (?) • Paid Family Leave (?)

Policy & Advocacy Committee activities • Committee: • Sent action alerts • Partnered with Minnesotans for Healthy Kids Coalition to organize Day on the Hill event • Signed on to numerous letters of support • Developed two resolutions • Vaccinations are Essential to the Health of Minnesota • Impact of Climate Change on Health • Members: • Called/sent messages to legislators and Governor • Attended Minnesotans for Healthy Kids Coalition Lobby Day

  7. Next up for Policy & Advocacy Committee • Gun violence prevention resolution • Continued partnership with the Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate • Membership survey to determine legislative priorities for the 2017 session
