  4. After the War • The Civil War ended in 1865 with the north & U.S. winning • The war left the south devastated • The focus of the U.S. now became how to re-admit the southern states into the Union. • This became known as the era of Reconstruction.

  5. You Decide Pretend you are from the north after the Civil War. What would you require the southern states to do in order for them to be re-admitted into your country?

  6. 3 Parts of Reconstruction • Reconstruction require the S. to do 3 things: • Political change: S. had to write new state constitutions that rejected secession and made slavery illegal • Economic change: S. had to find new ways to make $$$$ w/out slaves • Social change: S. had to develop the political and social status of former slaves • It would take 11 years for all of the southern states to eventually agree to these terms.
