A Message from our Project Director Roberta Acantilado The State of the Network for a Healthy California—LAUSD • A little background - • The source of Network funding all starts at the Federal level with the Farm Bill • The Farm Bill’s Food and Nutrition Service funds the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and SNAP-Ed Program which provide benefits and nutrition education to low-income households • Two-thirds of the Farm Bill is spent on nutrition including food stamps which are known as CalFresh in California • Currently about 1 in 7 Americans buy food using food stamps • At least half of the student population must qualify for CalFresh for a school to participate in the Network
A Message from our Project Director Roberta Acantilado Changes to SNAP-Ed funding distribution – The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act enacted in December of 2010 significantly increased the role of Local Health Departments (LHD) in nutrition and obesity prevention by placing greater emphasis on educating parents and improving community environments. Beginning in October of 2013 LHDs will take the lead in obesity prevention. Funding will be based on population needs meaning that LHDs in areas with a large number of low-income families will receive more funding and will subcontract out some services to school districts and community organizations.
A Message from our Project Director Roberta Acantilado Changes to SNAP-Ed funding distribution cont. – Network staff is waiting to receive grant guidelines from the State sometime in 2013, but for 2013-2014 and beyond the LAUSD Network anticipates receiving only a small portion of the funding seen in previous years which will greatly reduce staffing. The energy of Network staff during this 2012-2013 school year is focused on developing partnerships and training methods that will sustain the program by having schools access resources directly from providers. This year Network trainings will utilize the computer or occur as large events in regional areas.
A Message from our Project Director Roberta Acantilado The future is really about empowerment and sustainability at school sites – • the school family determining the needs of the community • finding the School Wellness Policy, sharing it openly, and using it as a guide, updating it if necessary • parents, students and school staff members reaching out to businesses, local and religious organizations to establish relationships that benefit the community • learning about resources that already exist in the community surrounding the school • identifying how those resources fit into the SMART Goals

A Message from our Project Director Roberta Acantilado The bottom line – The Network is in a state of change. We will communicate with you by email. The website will be updated often. Our training plan is still in development. We will be providing trainings online. We are not scheduling face-to-face trainings at this time. We ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate through uncharted waters. Regardless of the changes, the three core Network goals remain the same - we all need to eat more fruits and vegetables, increase physical activity, and decrease sugary beverages and increase healthy beverage consumption, mainly water. Your dedication and caring are commendable and are evident in your willingness to do “one more thing.” Thank you for your time and energy. It is an honor to serve you. Roberta P.S. - Calendars???? Goals of Harvest of the Month • The goals of the Harvest of the Month (HOTM) program are to motivate and empower students to eat more fruits and vegetables and to enjoy physical activity every day. • In our efforts to motivate students to make healthy choices, the HOTM program allows students to taste and explore the different California-grown fruits and vegetables featured each month.
Harvest of the Month Each scheduled month, you will receive: • a container of produce • a newsletter that offers fun curriculum tie-ins and physical activity suggestions Who will receive the HOTM produce? • participating teachers • cafeteria staff • parent centers
Harvest of the Month One week prior to produce delivery: • Lead Teacher will receive HOTM packet to include the Harvest of the Month Produce Receipt form and Educator newsletters for all participants. • Cafeteria staff will receive a copy of the Harvest of the Month Produce Receipt form and an Educator newsletter. • Parent Representative will receive a packet of the Harvest of the Month bilingual parent newsletters to distribute to parents.
Harvest of the Month When will you receive the produce? • Each school will receive produce on a predetermined, regular delivery schedule. • You will be given these dates by your point person.
Harvest of the Month When the produce arrives: • The cafeteria staff will verify that the number of produce cases match the number of names on the HOTM Produce Receipt form. • If there are discrepancies in case count or quality issues, call Abyz Dayrit at (818) 609-2550, or email abyz.dayrit@lausd.net within 24 hours of delivery.
Harvest of the Month When the produce arrives: • Cafeteria staff will inform the Lead Teacher that the produce has arrived and is ready for distribution. • As the Lead Teacher distributes the produce, they must obtain signatures from the participants on the Harvest of the Month Produce Receipt form. • The Lead Teacher will then fax this completed form to the Network office at 818-609-2580 and keep a copy with their Network records to satisfy state audit requirements.
HOTM Best Practices: • Plan in advance how to use produce with students to avoid spoilage and storage issues. • Remind participants to check the quality of the produce and inform the Lead Teacher if there are any issues. The Lead Teacher must inform Abyz Dayrit (818) 609-2550 at the Network within 24 hours. • Remind participants to have students wash their hands, use hand sanitizer and use gloves when preparing produce. • Wash all produce before using.
Who Can Receive Compensation? Classified Staff Cafeteria Manager or other Cafeteria Personnel Custodian
Cafeteria Staff Compensation $130.00 has been budgeted at each school site for cafeteria staff to complete Network duties outside of scheduled work hours. Examples of duties include: • Assisting with food preparation for school events. • Helping maintain a HOTM bulletin board. • Providing a tasting and sampling for students with the case of produce. • Collaborating with the parent center to do tasting and sampling for parents, classrooms, Back to School Night…
SMART GOAL SUPPORT • There is a support package or kit for every SMART Goal approved at your school site. • Each kit contains different items and is designed to help your school complete the SMART Goals selected by your leadership team. • The Network will inform the Lead Teacher of shipment details via email. • When each kit arrives, please verify the contents using the inventory sheet provided. • Contact your Network point person about any discrepancies. • Send the packing slip to the Network immediately so we can pay the vendor.

SMART GOAL DOCUMENTATION • Schools must show progress made on SMART Goals each quarter. • SMART Goal Tracking form must be updated electronically. • At the end of each quarter, send an electronic copy of your updated SMART Goal Tracking form to your point person.

Contracted Services(chef, farmer, theatrical, murals) Certain SMART Goals come with contracted services. Only Network contractors may be used. Lead Teachers will be contacted by email during October to schedule contracted services.
Program Reminders for Lead Teacher: • Return Professional Expert Pay Application if you want $30 per hour for Network management duties. Without the application, you will receive training rate at $25 per hour. • Fax in Produce Receipt forms every month. Faxes that contain the name of the school do not require a cover sheet. • Send in original packing slips for kit materials. • Mail in time sheets every four weeks.
Program Reminders for Participants: • Participating staff must completeNetwork Learning Zone training and submit the certificate of completion to the Lead Teacher by October 26th. • Collect Learning Zone training certificates from participants and mark their completion on the Intent to Participate. • Participating staff must read Network emails. They should not unsubscribe. • Participants need to regularly clean out their email inbox and empty the deleted mail file to allow room for new messages.
