Costa Rica Christmas Traditions • People in Costa Rica like to decorate their houses with beautiful tropical flowers • Christmas Wreaths are made of cypress branches and are decorated with red coffee berries and ribbons • Most homes, shops and important buildings are decorated with Christmas Lights • On Christmas Eve, everyone puts on their best clothes and goes to Midnight Mass • After Midnight Mass the main Christmas meal is eaten • Normally, the meal includes chicken and pork tamales that have been wrapped for cooking in plantain leaves • There’s lots of eggnog and rum punch to drink • After Christmas, and into January, there are tons of fiestas, parades, rodeos, street parties, bull runs, and choral and dance festivals

  3. Unique Tradition • Costa Ricans enjoy celebrating at this time of year. They have 3 main parades at the beginning of Christmas season on December 16th • El Carnival - Dancers and musical groups compete all over the world for best costumes, dancing talent, and music • El Tope - a parade with famous hand painting of ox carts. Originally these carts are pulled by people until 1840 when the exporting of coffee exploded • El Delstile de Luces - night time parade made with beautiful of thousands of Christmas lights. Parade people mostly enjoy
