  1. EE 4951 – Design Workshop Lecture 2: Robot Sumo Competition Rules

  2. Robot Sumo Rules • As the basis for our competition, we will use the FSI – All Japan Sumo Tournament rules, as published at: http://www.fsi.co.jp/sumo-e/out/outa0000.html#3 • A quick summary: Match Length: 3 minutes Ring (Dohyo)Diameter: 154 cm (5 feet) Main Objective: Force Opponent from Dohyo

  3. Robot Secifications • Max Cost: $800 (this is my rule) • Mass: 3 kg maximum (6.6 lbs) • Dimensions: • Length: 20 cm (7.9 inches) • Width: 20 cm • Height: No limit • Restrictions: • Robot must NEVER present a hazard to humans • Robot must demonstrate at least some mobility in the Dohyo • Robot must have a means of starting that will initiate a minimum of 5 seconds of delay • Cannot use “sticky” material in contact with Dohyo, or deface the Dohyo in any way • Cannot eject, fire or throw any material, whether gas, liquid or solid

  4. Robot Design Strategies • The BRICK – many tires for maximum traction, extremely low to the ground on all sides (to avoid getting scooped), some ability to push opponent • The PUSHER – quick and agile, very low front end to get under opponent, tip him and drive him out of ring • The SCOOPER – scoop arm on the front (able to raise to vertical to meet length restriction), intended to lift opponent off its wheels

  5. Getting Started: • Teams: Team 1: Chris Mason, Emily Howe, GerVueTeam 2: Jeff Torgerson, Nick Schmitz, ShouaVang,Team 3: Richard Allen, Dana Gorg, Chee LeeTeam 4: Henok Araya, Jake Clifton, AamaniGundu • Need to find a time to meet with me every week

  6. For next week: • Identify a kit from which to start building your sumo-bot • Be mindful of the $800 limit on total cost • Determine a basic strategy for competition – Pusher design, etc • Be aware that most kits are intended for the 500 gram weight class (Would we rather do that?)
