MISSION: To provide educational opportunity and support workforce development for Greater Cleveland through a broad range of financial aid and advisory programs.Est 1967
CSP Programs • Early Awareness Advising (Grades 1-8) • High School Advising (Grades 9-12) • Adult Learner (Ages 19+) • (i)Cleveland (Post-secondary students) • Financial Aid (Post-secondary students) • Resource Center (General public)
Advisory Services • 18 High School Advisors, 50 High Schools (urban, suburban, parochial) • Recommend seniors for CSP scholarships • Criteria: 2.5 GPA, 17 ACT, 820 SAT, family income under $60,000
Late Spring • Manager of financial aid awards the students with available funds based on criteria and advisors’ recommendations/rankings • One-on-one meeting • Subjective aspect of considering special circumstances • Loss of income • Independent student • Overcome hardships; language barrier, lack of parent involvement • Siblings in college also • Letters go out to the students inviting them to the interview
Main Objectives • Administer CSP Scholarships • Explain & clarify financial aid • To facilitate college matriculation and enrollment
Summer InterviewsFreshmen • Parent vs. no parent present: • May have to educate parent as well as student regarding financial aid • Overwhelmed with cost of attendance/not understand the costs (direct/indirect) • Worried about child moving out of home • Has not visited the college- many unknown factors (location, safety, ect…) • Parental involvement is encouraged by CSP
Parents cont. • Interview may be 1st time student and parent talk about finances • May be 1st time student and parent talk about expectations • Opportunity to encourage communication between parent and student • Interview is for the student but also want parent to understand financial aid
Parents cont. • No parent present- many reasons • Work and not available • Want student to be independent • Uninvolved • Student is on their own- financially and otherwise & needs extra support
Student • Confident in college selection & understands financial aid • Enter info into CSP database • Review award letter • Explain CSP scholarship • Determine if unmet need • Write thank you letter to donor • Explain resources available on college campus: academic advisors, fin aid counselors, tutors, study groups, etc…
CSP Database • Contact info: address, phone, email • College selection: commute, dorm • Award letter: enter amounts • CSP scholarship • Award agreement: student signs & keeps copy • Release of info: student signs • Database used to track students

Appeal Process • Students can request an appeal twice • Academic appeal • Financial appeal • Letter to CSP Manager of Financial Aid • Considered on individual basis
Transfer • Too far from home, too expensive, changed major, etc… • Help students complete necessary paperwork to transfer • Verify financial aid at new institution
Tri-C Transfer Program(Cuyahoga Community College) • Two years at Tri-C • Transfer to a 4-year institution • Receive $2,000 scholarship for junior and senior year (total 4,000) • Many colleges match the $$ for a total of $8,000 in scholarship funds • Only for CMSD students with at least a 2.5 gpa, family income under $60,000
Retention • CSP toll free # (800) NEED AID and email • Encourage students to use resources offered by the institutions • Academic advisors • Financial aid counselors • Tutors • Campus organizations
Campus Rep Program • A contact person (upperclassman CSP recipient) for incoming freshman • Support, help with transition to college • Availability of funding has not been consistent year to year
CSP Alumni Association • Volunteer for on-line mentoring program -matches volunteer alumni to students interested in a mentor -CSP college students can search on the CSP website for mentors who share the same college, major, or high school • Speak to groups of students about college and career choices • Help organize alumni activities
CSP Resource Center • Excellent source for retaining students • Free to the public • Internet access, college view books, catalogs, applications • Assistance with the FAFSA and scholarship applications
College Kick Off! • Celebration held in August • Guests: new CSP scholarship recipients, upperclassmen, middle school students, CSP advisors, interested CSP trustees • Advisor-student connection to help with retention
Interesting Facts • Last year, 420 (freshman) students selected for scholarships- 40 were not awarded • 2,017 total CSP scholarship recipients • CSP disbursed $2.5 million in scholarships during FY 2002-03 • Approx 86% of our college freshman are retained into sophomore year, compared to 74% nationally & 75% in Ohio
