If you analyze travel costs the main components are travel and accommodation. Backpacking saves on both counts. You can make your dollars stretch out for days. You can explore the entire country when you go backpacking, make friends and have a rich experience. Knowing a few things might help. If you value safety and cozy comfort, go for Malaysia tour packages. If you can rough it out, go backpacking in Malaysia. If you do this then safety comes first. It is safe on the whole except in some tourist areas and that too at night. Just be careful of pickpockets and be alert late at night. The threat backpackers will face is from speeding motorists and motorcycle drivers. Be careful. This will not stop at red lights. Do not carry all cash in one roll. Distribute it and when you pay for food or anything you buy, do not present a fat wallet. Female backpackers are best advised to try not to go it alone. You must eat to keep walking. Food is cheap, especially at food stalls. Try to find Buddhist or Hindu temples where they may serve food. You may even get free food. Alcohol may be expensive so drink in moderation! Try to eat Nasi Lesak, it is cheap and wholesome. It can cost about $1.

If you have more time at your disposal you can take off from George Town to the other side of the coast and visit Pehertian Islands and then the Cameron Highlands and Taman Neagara before arriving at Kuala Lumpur. It is your choice. Cross country hike can be quite interesting as you travel across forests, mountains and rice fields.

  3. Known as the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi’s pristine beaches and carefree atmosphere will get to you. Spend a day or two on this island. It is nature at its most beautiful. George Town is bustling and you will love to explore the colonial areas. If you feel hungry there are dozens of street food vendors everywhere. Do visit Penang Hill and the temples here. This is another tropical paradise. Go for a canoe ride on the river and explore the forest. It is just so peaceful and quiet. Like George Town, this is another colonial town with Portuguese overtones. Malacca has atmosphere. Enjoy it for a couple of days. Besides, it also has a number of guesthouses where you can stay quite cheaply for the night. Layang Layang Guesthouse is one and Mori residence is a bit better. Spend at least two to three days in the capital city. Make sure you visit Chinatown and Little India. Next, you can hike or take a local bus to the Batu cave temple complex. Make it a point to hitchhike to Ipoh, the third largest city inMalaysia. Save money on internet by finding free Wi-Fi zones.
