  1. Batiking and Sewing a Bag! Get out your journal and something to write with!

  2. Procedure 1. Melted wax is applied to cloth before being painted with dye. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. 2. Thin wax lines are made with a tjanting needle, wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps. Other methods of applying the wax onto the fabric include pouring the liquid wax, painting the wax on with a brush. 3. After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry. Then it is ironed between paper towels or newspapers to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colors and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character

  5. Original Designs Patterns/Random Patterns Animals Landscapes Flowers Nature Scenes Dragons Portraits (from REAL photographs) Contour line Drawings Start thinking about what you will do for you Batiks!

  6. Rules for Contour Line Drawings • Do NOT pick up you pencil • Draw on continuous line • Draw what you SEE not what you think you see • NO Erasing! • Have fun with it! • Large free flowing gestures!

  7. How the project will be GRADED… Batiking and Sewing a Bag! Product (Contents): 3 sketch designs before you begin…each one needs to be at least ½ sheet of paper in size One rectangular Batik where the entire fabric is covered with design and color/dye…NO white showing (except where the wax was) One sewed messenger/ throw bag made of the batik fabric and lined with a layer of muslin or other colored fabric that you brought. Bag must also have a strap

  8. Process (Craftsmanship): Take your time…the wax and dying process is slow. Keep your work neat! All the wax must be completely removed from the fabric The dye on the batik must be dark and vibrant Bag must have no seams showing, holes, or string hanging off

  9. Studio time: Stayed on task Supplies MUST be put away where they go! Worked continuously throughout the class period Must participate in clean up & put materials AWAY Make up any missed days: That means excused or unexcused, 3 tardies = 1 absence
