GLOBAL WARMING?Maybe better thought of as: “Climate Change” • MAIN FACTORS to consider • 1) The Greenhouse Effect • 2) Greenhouse gases • Natural • Anthropologic • 3) The “Albedo Effect” – Exponential change • 4) Evidence • 5) Relation to Ozone Layer
. Main Green House Gases • Natural • 1) Water Vapor – Most abundant • 2) CO2– respiration, ocean-atmosphere exchange, natural fires, and volcanic activity • 3) Methane and trace gases – volcanic activity • Anthropogenic - 1) CO2 - Combustion of Fossil Fuels (Oil, Coal, Natural Gas), deforestation, and wildfires. - 2) Methane – Flatulence from Cattle and industrial pollution

Carbon Dioxide – Infrared EmissionKind of like a blanket --- But quite different http://www.rkm.com.au/ANIMATIONS/carbon-dioxide-global-warming.html http://www.ucar.edu/learn/1_3_1.htm

Formation of Fossil Fuels • All formed from ancient living creatures (plants and animals) that were buries deep in sedimentary rock. • Factors that determine type of fossil fuel: • What combination of plant and animal remains were present? • How long they were buried • Amount of Pressure and Temperature present during decomposition.
OIL and GAS (Water Organisms) • Ocean/river sediments • Later heat/pressure and bacteria • Hotter areas produced gas • Both make there way up to a caprock Image taken from: earthsci.org/.../fossil_fuels/fossil_fuels.html

Evidence of Global Warming 1) Correlation of Ave. Global Temp. and CO2 levels. 2) Glacial Ice Cores • Ratio of water’s oxygen-18 and oxygen-16 isotopes at different temperatures • Annual Precipitation, atmospheric composition, volcanic activity, and wind patterns 3) Global Ice Melt 4) Spread of Tropical Diseases 5) More frequent extreme weather

5. Ozone Layer • Over 90% of the high energy UV radiation (UVB and UVC) is absorbed during the formation and destruction of the Ozone Layer. • Ozone is O3 and found a layer in the Stratosphere (second layer up from the ground) • CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) can destroy the ozone layer
