In the Beginning Lamb County Health and Safety Alliance • Started in August 2007 • Focuses on injury prevention among youth • Conduct various community and school based projects: Shattered Dreams, Red Ribbon Activities, Street Smart Program, Health and Safety Fairs, Seatbelt Rollover Convincer, Safety Presentations, Bike Safety Rodeos, Community Health Fairs, Car Seat Clinics, etc. • Coalition meets monthly • Serve as Chair • Conducted Community Health Needs Assmt.
Who we got…… • Current Membership: • Schools – including Dare Officer • Community Agencies- YMCA, CIS, PBBH • Texas Agrilife Extension • Juvenile Probation • Local Law Enforcement • Local Hospital • Tx Dot • County Judge • County EMC • Mayor
Tips to keep it going…. • Take the time to gain their trust. • Ask questions, don’t assume. • Stay committed to what you say your going to do. • Always have a meeting agenda. • Keep them interested by providing County specific • data. • Make a work plan. • Celebrate successes.
Lamb County Assessment • Process started in December 2008 • Initiated by Lamb County Coalition and County Judge. • 500 surveys completed. • Hosted 6 Community Forums. • Findings presented in June 2009. • Next step – follow up meetings.
Lessons learned • Appoint one community helper. Get this before the assessment starts. • Find agencies to sponsor food for the Community Forums. • Don’t have the assessment end in May-August. • Get Schools to buy in. • Make contacts at social clubs such as Women’s Leagues, Rotary, Lion’s etc. • Have a plan for when the assessment is complete.
