Getting Hard Nosed about Soft - Green - Infrastructure Jochen Rabe UNDER PRESSURE SSW Annual Conference 2010
Green Infrastructure is a vital component of sustainable communities.
A Risk Management Strategy A sustainable Strategy • Living within environmental limits. (i.e looking after earth’s natural resources and biodiversity) • A strong, healthy and just society (i.e meeting the diverse needs of all people, promoting community cohesion and equal opportunities) • Achieving a sustainable economy (i.e seek prosperity for all, making the ”polluter pay” to address any social and environmental costs of economic activities, efficient use of resources) • Promoting good governance (extensive community engagement) • Using sound science responsibly (using robust evidence base, using “precautionary principle” where impacts unknown) Green Infrastructure
Key Issues for Green Infrastructure • Unrivaled Complexity designed by nature • It is difficult to communicate • An awful lot of people to understand, talk and to agree • Difficult Quantification of the Value of Green Infrastructure • Difficult to prioritise to unlock the value of Green Infrastructure Networks

Drivers of Change – raising issues • Urbanisation • Demographics • Food • Poverty • Energy • Waste • Climate Change • Water
Green Infrastructure – responding to Drivers of Change Energy Waste Climate Change Food Water Urbanisation Demographics
Integrated planning of Green Infrastructure is the most robust risk management strategy in breadth Over time at intersections in depth
