  1. The History of the Apartheid By Mrs. T

  2. South Africa • South Africa (see map) is a country blessed with an abundance of natural resources • South African mines are world leaders in the production of diamonds and gold • The climate is mild, reportedly resembling the San Francisco bay area weather more than anywhere in the world

  3. South Africa • South Africa was colonized by the English and Dutch in the seventeenth century • Wars have been fought over the gold and diamonds in SA • Dutch finally became independent from England after the Boer War • There seemed to be two major political parties that fought for power

  4. Apartheid • One of the political parties, the National Party invented apartheid as a means to cement their control over the economic and social system • Initially, aim of the apartheid was to maintain white domination while extending racial separation • Starting in the 60's, a plan of “Grand Apartheid'' was executed, emphasizing territorial separation and police repression.

  5. Separate but NOT Equal • Race laws touched every aspect of social life • including a prohibition of marriage between non-whites and whites • the sanctioning of “white-only'' jobs • All blacks were required to carry “pass books'' • containing fingerprints • photo and information on access to non-black areas

  6. Removal…. • Non-white South Africans were forced to move to reserves, which were on the outskirts of the city • They were subjugated to police raids • The schools were not equipped well enough to teach students • Malnutrition, famine, and death were rampant!

  7. Apartheid and the People of South Africa • The apartheid policy was highly effective of achieving its goal of preferential treatment for whites, as is demonstrated by the statistics in Figure 1
