  1. Scientific Method in Biology Learning Target 4

  2. Scientific Method in Biology Observing and Hypothesizing • We ask questionsbecause we are curious • So we can better understand our world • Scientific Method – a logical sequence of steps/ procedures scientist use to solve problems

  3. Scientific Method in Biology “5” Steps to the Method • Hypothesis – A testable explanation for a question/ problem • Not a random guess • Based on observation • It is you possible answer to the problem NOT YET TESTED!!

  4. Scientific Method in Biology 2. Experimentation – A procedure that tests a hypothesis by colleting data under controlled conditions • Experiment in which only one factor/ variable is tested at a time • Experiments are broken down into two groups • Controlled Group- The standard, all conditions are the same • Experimental Group- All are the same as control butone thing changes or varies

  5. Scientific Method in Biology Independent Variable – The condition of the experiment that you set up or determine Shown on the X axis of the graph “I” determine how it changes = “independent” Dependent Variable – The thing that you are trying to find out in the experiment Shown on the Y axis of the graph “Don’t know” who it will change = “dependent” Ex: Increase the temperature on a bacteria culture to see the effect on population size Independent would be the Temperature Dependentwould be the Population Size

  6. Scientific Method in Biology 3. Gather Data- Information obtained from the experiment • Can be quantitativeor qualitative • Qualitative- is words or descriptions (yellow, soft, large) • Quantitative- is numbers (10cm, 20psi)

  7. Scientific Method in Biology 4. Analyze Data- Look at the results • Decide do the results support thehypothesis • Or do I need to rejectthehypothesis • Also allows us to determine if - More data is needed - If should be repeated - How itcomparesto other’s findings • Must repeat the experiment many times to get the same results to see if the data is reliable and valid

  8. Scientific Method in Biology 5. Reporting Results • Must be able to read, evaluate, and critique your results for validity • If they can repeat it, more support is given to your hypothesis and conclusion

  9. Scientific Method in Biology • Theory - A hypotheses that is supported by many different experiments over a long period of time • Continual verification • Explains why • Allows you to predict

  10. Scientific Method in Biology • Law • States an observation about nature • Doesnot explain • Onlystateswhat is observed in nature • Apply to SPECIFIC instances

  11. Hypothesis v. Theory v. Law • In science a hypotheis ≠ theory • Laws ≠ Theories GovernmentScience Law Theory Theory Law Hypothesis Hypothesis Importance Proof
