What is Thomas Hobbes known for? Thomas Hobbes is mostly known for his theory of how the social contract should be. In Hobbes mind, there is a sovereign that has all over the power and man should retain their liberty in areas where the sovereign is not present. In that case, It would be authoritarianism. • Sovereign: A ruler or a dictator that has all power • Authoritarianism: (Dictatorship) A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator. (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition.) An example of Authoritarianism would be in Eritrea.
Hobbes' feelings on.. • Hobbes believes that we all have natural rights. • Even though we all have natural rights, he believes that we should be able to give up some of those rights when we enter a social contract. • In a social contract man loses his/her right to liberty. • Also, in a social contract human rights are protected.
Hobbes' feelings on.. • Hobbes thought democracy would never work because people are only motivated by self interest. • Hobbes also thought that democracy ' is inferior to monarchy because democracy fosters destabilizing dissension among subjects.' • He also thought that being in a social contract would protect people from their own selfishness.
Hobbes' feelings on.. • Hobbes believes that man without a social contract are selfish, competitive, and anti-social. • All beings that are in a social contract should give up some of their natural rights to their sovereign. • Hobbes also finds man without a social contract 'Nasty, brutish, and short.'
Hobbes' feelings on.. • Hobbes values equality in life meaning that one person shouldn't be more important than another being. • He also values 'societal welfare' • Societal welfare means the well being of a society in matters of health, safety, order, and economics. • He also believes in equality among man.
Hobbes' famous quotation 'Men in a state of nature that is a state without civil government are in war of all against in which life is hardly worth living. The way out of this desperate state is to make a social contract and establish the state to keep peace and order.' How can this be applied today? A social contract has been in Eritrea (located in africa) for a long time. I do think it is working, but the citizens are not happy. They have to give up some of their rights and may not be happy with some of the decisions of the higher power.
