  1. Critical Metals, Awareness and Activity in Product Design Jan Vermeer (1632 – 1675) Delft View of Delft c. 1660-61 Oil on canvas, Royal Cabinet of Paintings Mauritshuis, The Hague Grant DeVolson Wood (1891-1942) Trained: School of the Art Institute of Chicago American Gothic, 1930The Art Institute of Chicago David Peck d.p.peck@tudelft.nl September 19, 2014

  2. Tale of two strategies…..or two Roberts “If the world's population grows faster than the planet's ability to produce food and other necessities…at a certain point it will lead to a sudden population collapse.” “Duelling theories breed inaction. ….. the easiest course is to wait” T Robert Malthus "If it is easy to substitute other factors for natural resources, then there is in principle no 'problem.' The world can, in effect, get along without natural resources, so exhaustion is just an event, not a catastrophe." Robert Solow Martin & Kemper, HBR, 2012

  3. Volatility in commodity markets 1980 – 2012 Lee B, et al, Resources Futures, Chatham House (The Royal Institute of International Affairs), 2012, p59

  4. The trend…. 2020? 2050? “To put GE’s material usage in perspective, we use at least 70 of the first 83 elements listed in the Periodic Table of Elements” Duclos, 2010

  5. Critical materials are….. Many different things to many different people Overview of critical elements European Commission, (2010): Critical raw materials for the EU

  6. Critical Materials – used in…..

  7. 29 publications 2000-2013 defining CRM:

  8. Interlinked and complex European Commission, (2010): Critical raw materials for the EU

  9. It will get tougher…

  10. Awareness How well are the developments on the field of critical materials followed within the company?

  11. So are companies risk mitigating?… Can the participant name the measures the company has taken as a response to issues caused by critical materials?

  12. Opportunity…

  13. Circular product design, production & business Focus areas for new thinking include: • Modularisation & Standardisation (e.g., replacement of modules) • Design for easier disassembly • Design to last which will facilitate reuse and remanufacture And longer-lasting products need (as a starting point): • Performance-based business models (e.g., lease-hold, bundling)

  14. Cross sector collaboration Rethink economic incentives, e.g. shift the tax from labor / income towards non-renewable resources Provide a suitable set of international rules; standards and regulation Lead by example: Public sector procurement (EU = 17% GDP)

  15. Tale of two strategies….. Either, or? No more ‘duelling’ Time is tight Collaboration is essential Product designers need both approaches to find innovative solutions Design products differently in response to a resource constrained world T Robert Malthus Develop exciting opportunities arising out of science and technology research Robert Solow Martin & Kemper, HBR, 2012

  16. Material library Made of.. ResCom ..closed-loop product systems Great partners and funders Thank you – questions?
