Grieving Dunstable Family Could Be In Line For £1 Million Asbestos Payout From Vauxhall Mr Carey explained that this work required the stripping off and reapplication of asbestos on pipe work throughout the factory, while his work clothes became contaminated with dust. The premises lacked any showering facilities or laundering service. Vauxhall defended the claim, arguing that very little asbestos remained in the factory by 1973, as well as that any jobs involving asbestos disturbance were carried out under strictly controlled conditions. Nor, the manufacturer insisted, would John have taken his overalls home to be laundered. However, none of the 2,000 pages of documents provided by Vauxhall confirmed the removal of asbestos from Dunstable or that safe systems of working with asbestos were put in place prior to the 1980s, despite the dangers of asbestos exposure having been known since the 1960s.
