Author’s Purpose • Entertain: Authors want their readers to enjoy what they write. • Inform: Authors want to explain or give information about a topic. Usually used in nonfiction. • Persuade: Authors want readers to do or believe something. This is often the purpose of speeches, advertisements, and letters to the editor. Sometimes authors combine more than one purpose in a story. You can figure out the purpose by asking, “What is this author trying to tell me?”
