Subject • Subject: What/whom the sentence is about • Kinds of Subjects: 1. Simple Subject (1 noun/ pronoun) 2. Compound Subject (> 1 noun/ pronoun) • Examples: 1. A beautiful, young, and talented ballerina is attracting most of the spectators in hall. 2. Judy and her dog joy along the shore. 3. My mother and I always spend Christmas holiday in Bali every year. 4. A bunch of roses is a symbol of love. 5. Three little kittens are sleeping
Predicate • Predicate: Tell about something about the subject (which always includes VERB). • Kinds of predicate: 1. Simple predicate (1 verb link up to subject) 2. Compound predicate (>1 verbs that modifies the same subject) • Examples: 1. Judy and her dog jog along the shore 2. My sister read and practiced the recipes 3. The students read the passage and then answer the question provided. 4. Three little kittens are sleeping
Predicate=Verb (center of predicate) • There are 2 kinds of verbs: 1. TRANSITIVE: verb that take the object 2. INTRANSITIVE: verb not followed by object • Examples: 1. I am sleeping on the sofa 2. Mother bought me some presents for my birthday party. 3. My sister always wakes up at 5 o’clock 4. Father teaches English 5. I was absent yesterday
Object • Object: completes the verb meaning • Kinds of object: 1. Direct Object (DO) what/ whom 2. Indirect Object (IO) to/for what/whom • Examples: 1. I was watching television when the telephone rang 2. Father sent mea letter last year 3. Her secret admirer gave hera bouquet of roses 4. John loves Marry very much
Complement • Words/phrases that follow the linking verb or noun that modifies/describe the subject/object after linking verb. • Kinds of Complement 1. Subject Complement (SC) 2. Object Complement (OC) • Examples 1. Bill Clinton became a president in 1997 2. Your chicken curry tastes salty 3. I found a young boy sleeping on the bench 4. Paint the chair black please
Unusual Sentence • Imperative sentence • Sentence begins with There + to be • Examples: 1. Pass me the salt, please! 2. There are three cute puppies playing around the yard. 3. Don’t go, dear! 4. There was a handsome prince lived in the jungle with a smart monkey.
