Hazard Communication Plan • A copy of the Hazard Communication Plan for the District is located at each campus/department library and with the District Safety Committee member • Chemical product lists and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available at worksites • Employees working with chemicals will be trained on proper use of products and use of personal protective equipment
M S D S • Training will be provided on MSDS – Material Safety Data Sheets • Every campus/dept. should have a binder with MSDS for chemicals used at that site • All employees have the RIGHT TO KNOW about the hazards of chemicals in the workplace and how to protect oneself – Signs posted • All containers should be labeled with name of chemical it contains
Chemical Safety • Do not attempt to refill chemicals or toner in copiers, printers, or duplicating machines unless you have been trained in their maintenance • Use the proper Personal Protective Equipment when using chemicals: gloves, goggles, safety glasses, aprons, dust masks/respirator, etc. as required and recommended by MSDS
Emergency Crisis Plans • Employees will be trained in their campus’s Emergency Crisis Plan by their supervisors/administrators • In case of an emergency, employees must be aware of procedures to follow; evacuations, exit locations, telephone numbers, etc.
Fire Prevention Safety • Learn locations of fire extinguishers • Use fire extinguishers only on small, contained fires • If in doubt, sound alarm, evacuate and let trained firefighters handle it • You will receive training on fire extinguishers • Learn exit routes from your area (posted) • Do not block fire exit doors.
General Safety Rules • Do not attempt to move heavy objects alone. Get help from the maintenance department to move heavy furniture or heavy objects • Always wear your safety belt when moving or lifting heavy objects • Safety belts do not permit you to lift heavier items than what you usually do • Dollies and desk moving equipment should be used to move heavy objects
Prevent Slips and Falls • Clearly mark any dangerous areas such a broken windows, slippery floors, wet floors, torn carpet, or defective furniture and report the hazard to your principal or supervisor. • Keep your area neat and orderly at all times to avoid tripping hazards. • Respect “Wet Floor” and other “Caution” signs.
General Safety Rules • Do not string cables or extension cords across surfaces where people may walk without covering properly to prevent a tripping hazard. • Wear closed toe shoes with medium to low heels to prevent slips and falls • Open one file drawer at a time, and close drawers when not in use.
General Safety Rules • Use caution when shelving or removing books in libraries. • Do not attempt to catch a book that falls. • Use a step stool to reach higher shelves. • Use caution when lowering or raising wall screens/charts in case equipment falls from brackets.

General Safety Rules • Do not attempt to repair anything you are not qualified to repair. • Report defective equipment to the building administrator. • Read instructions before operating any equipment or appliance. • Obtain permission to operate equipment if necessary.
Prevent Cuts Use these precautions with paper cutters: Keep your fingers away from blade Keep cutting blade in down position when not in use Make sure paper cutter is on flat surface Use equipment such as scissors, staplers, and staple removers cautiously and only for purpose for which they were designed
NEVER place knives in sink full of water • Knives should be cleaned/stored right away • Do not use knives for prying lids off or out of cans • Always use cutting board with non-slip mat or towel to prevent movement • Use approved gloves for boning/cutting • If you drop a knife, let it fall • Cut a flat base on item being cut to avoid slipping
Prevent Burns • Ensure that laminating machines are properly guarded to prevent contact with heated surfaces. • Exercise caution when clearing paper jams from copiers and printers; avoid contact with heated surfaces.
Safe Lifting Techniques • Evaluate load to be lifted. Use dolly or mechanical device whenever possible. • Set feet solidly on ground, spaced apart and close to load. • Bend knees outward, crouch over load keeping back as straight as possible and grasp load securely. • Push up with legs, bring back upright keeping load close to body. • Avoid jerking motion.
Safe Lifting Techniques • If necessary to change directions while lifting the load or after it has been brought to carrying position, be careful not to twist the body. Turn the body by changing feet position. • When placing the load on a surface such as a bench or table, place it on the edge so that the landing point assumes part of the load, then push with arms.
Safe Lifting Techniques • If lowering load to floor, reverse lifting method; bend knees and with back straight and load close to body, lower load using arm and leg muscles. • Never carry a load of such size that it reduces your visibility. • Use back belts consistently and properly. • A back belt does not allow you to lift a heavier load that you would normally.
General Safety Rules • Do not store combustibles near boilers or electrical equipment. • Do not block access to electrical panels. • Store heavy and bulky items at waist level, lighter items above shoulder level. • Store rarely used items below waist level. • Compressed gas tanks or cylinders should be stored in an upright position, capped and chained to prevent falling.

Make sure it is strong enough and long enough to work comfortably. • Avoid metal ladder when chance of contact with electrical current • Avoid using ladders in hallways while students are changing classes.
Ladder Safety • Never use a damaged/defective ladder. • If a ladder must be set up in traffic area, use a barricade or guard to prevent collisions. • Face ladder and hold on with both hands while climbing/ascending. • Use “belt buckle” rule, your belt buckle should not move beyond the ladder sides.
Ladder Safety • Do not climb higher than second step from top on stepladder or third rung on straight ladder. • Do not carry items in your hands when climbing a ladder. Have someone hand them to you or hoist items up with rope. • When setting up stepladder, make sure the folding metal braces are fully locked in fully extended position and safety feet are secured.
Electrical Safety • Electrical Safety - Make sure that electrical equipment is grounded to prevent shock. • Use approved three-wire extension cords with ground plugs. • Use double insulated tools if it is not possible to obtain a secure ground. • Do not use damaged or defective equipment or cords. Report it to your supervisor immediately.

Grasp the plug and pull. • Do not use electrical equipment in wet areas. • Be careful not to overload outlets or extension cords. If a socket face or extension cord becomes warm, discontinue use immediately and report it.
REPORT INJURIES • Report injuries to the School Nurse immediately • Report incident to Supervisor within 24 hours if Supervisor is not present at time of injury • Failure to report incident/injury as requested is grounds for a written warning • Doctor’s Work Status Report is needed to return to work. Take report to Worker’s Comp Office for letter authorizing employee to return to work depending on restrictions • If out for extended period of time, employee must call in to WC Office once a week.
Workers’ Compensation Doctor Network (The Alliance) • You must choose a doctor from the Alliance list • For a specialist, the treating doctor will refer you to a specialist on the network, and you need to verify that the specialist is a member of the Alliance • For emergencies, you may go to any licensed medical professional within the United States • If you go to a non-approved doctor, you will probably have to pay the bill • Change of doctor, should be from the Alliance network • A third choice requires approval from the TASB adjuster
