Triangular Trade • Trade Involving the Old and New Worlds [invloved Africa, Americas and Europe] • Slave Trade was part of it. • Slaves were brought for plantation work • Slave Trade included the Middle Passage • Slave ships’ route from Africa to America across the Atlantic.
Effects of Slave Trade • By the end of 1800s 11 million Africans were sent to the Americas against their will • Wars broke out between different African tribes. • Trans-Saharan trade network declined & trade also declined • African Societies were deprived of the young and energetic men and women • Many African societies were ruined.
Spain Built an Empire Characteristics of Spanish Empire • Government • Strict control by Spanish monarch • Appointed viceroys to rule provinces on his/her behalf • Religion: • Catholic Church helped run the government and converted thousands of Native Americans to Christianity. • Missions served as schools and hospitals
Encomienda • A system that granted land to a conquistador in Americas and right to demand labor from Native Americans in return for protection • Many Native Americans died from overwork & European diseases • Culture • A combination of European, Native American and African culture developed • People spoke Spanish with Native American and African words added.

Columbian Exchange A world wide exchange of plants, animals, humans, diseases and ideas triggered by Columbus’s exploration of the Americas Peanut, Tomato, potato, vanilla, chocolate, corns, beans, squash, Pineapple, etc. Old World New World Cattle, horses, fowl, citrus, camel, cat, donkey, pigs, rice, guns, typhus, malaria, small pox, measles, etc.
