Christopher Columbus • Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492, hoping to find a route to India in order to trade for spices. • He made 4 voyages, always believing that he had reached Asia. • He has always been known as the man who “discovered” America even though other groups of people had arrived there before him.
Robert LaSalle • René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle was a French explorer. He was sent by King Louis XIV (14) to travel south from Canada and sail down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. • He was the first European to travel the length of the Mississippi River. He was trying to establish fur trade routes along the river. • La Salle named the entire Mississippi basin Louisiana, in honor of the King, and claimed it for France on April 9, 1682.
Alonso Alvarez de Pineda • Alonso Álvarez de Pineda commanded a Spanish expedition that sailed along the Gulf of Mexico coastline from Florida to Cabo Rojo, Mexico, in 1519. • He and his men were the first Europeans to explore and map the Gulf • Álvarez de Pineda thus proved that Florida was not an island
Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca • Cabeza de Vaca was a Spanish explorer who sailed to North America from Spain in 1527. • He traveled from Florida to Texas on a raft and then walked from Texas to Mexico City. • Cabeza and his fellow travelers were the first Europeans to see the American buffalo.
Francisco Vasquez de Coronado • Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was a Spanish ruler and explorer. He was the first European to explore North America’s Southwest. • He searched fruitlessly for treasure that was rumored to exist in northern Mexico: the fabled seven Golden Cities of Cibola.
