Cultural Changes • Music • Rock-n-roll • Beatles/Bob Dylan • Art – questioned what was “real” • Changing religious views – New Age/Buddhism, less participation in organized religion • Increased drug use • Increasing crime helped end movement by 1969 along with high profile deaths
Women’s Rights Movement • 1960’s/70’s – rise of feminism, emphasis on equality not just voting rights • Typified by Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique • NOW – National Organization of Women • Wanted to break the “glass ceiling” and redefine traditional stereotypes for women • Supported ERA – Equal Rights Amendment • Gained Title IX – Higher Education Act -1972
