  1. INTD 53 color and the principles of design we must be aware of how it interacts with the other elements and principles of design

  2. rhythm imposes order and unity on a design repeating hues is extremely important to any piece—creates coherence; can impart movement

  3. rhythm hues put into a sequence or progression allow eye to move comfortably through composition

  4. balance symmetrical balance—achieved when composition employs “mirror imaging” of components

  5. balance asymmetrical balance—achieved when components are not mirrored along central axis visual placement still produces pleasing overall effect

  6. proportion • refers to the relationship between: • one part of a design to another part • one part and the • whole piece • all the parts to each • other and the whole

  7. proportion John Goodwin—triadic color system Goethe notations

  8. scale • encompasses the concept of size relationships: • actual area of color used • boldness of color used

  9. scale • encompasses the concept of size relationships: • actual area of color used • boldness of color used

  10. emphasis concerned with creating areas of importance for viewer to focus upon

  11. emphasis—golden rectangle

  12. emphasis—golden rectangle

  13. harmony • the visual agreement of all various parts of a work—results in unity • achieved by using principles of design • repetition of color easiest • layering of colors over constant color • adjusting values creates variety • color schemes/color harmonies

  14. harmony—color harmonies • related— • monochromatic • analogous • contrasting— • complementary

  15. harmony—color harmonies • contrasting— • double complementary • split complementary

  16. harmony—color harmonies • contrasting— • triad

  17. participation activity: colorways …design a fabric pattern—you may use the samples in the resource room as inspiration …create 4 different colorways of that pattern using whichever media type you feel most comfortable with (paint, markers, pencils, etc…) and the principles discussed in lecture …each colorway should be 5 x 5 and on a separate sheet of paper COLORWAY 1 COLORWAY 2 COLORWAY 3 COLORWAY 4
