  1. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY

  2. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • This presentation is to provide you with the basic information needed to safely operate a charged fire extinguisher that you will find at home and work • Feel free to ask questions at anytime during this presentation

  3. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Use a fire extinguisher only if: • You have alerted other occupants and someone has called the fire department; • The fire is small and contained to a single object, such as a wastebasket; • You are safe from the toxic smoke produced by the fire; • Your instincts tell you that it is safe to use an extinguisher. • If all of these conditions are not present, you should NOT try to use a fire extinguisher. Alert other occupants, leave the building, go to the agreed upon meeting place, and call the fire department from a cell phone or a neighbor's home.

  4. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Fire Extinguishers are broken up into “Classes” • The Classes explain what types of fires the extinguisher chemical can handle

  5. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • The most common fire extinguisher you will find in your home and/or work is known as an ABC Fire Extinguisher. • This fire extinguisher will come in the most common sizes of 2.5lbs, 5lbs, 10lbs, or 20lbs

  6. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • To tell what class fire your fire extinguisher can handle, look for the label that MUST be present on the front of the extinguisher. Class “A” Fire Extinguisher. This fire extinguisher can only handle fires of ordinary combustibles. Class “ABC” Fire Extinguisher. This fire extinguisher can handle fires of any of these classes

  7. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Class “A” Fire Extinguisher • This is a pressurized water extinguisher. CAN NOT BE USED with Chemicals or Live Electrical Fires.

  8. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • ABC Fire Extinguisher • This can be used on any of the fires involving ordinary combustibles, chemicals, and or live electrical equipment.

  9. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Fire that is involving live electrical equipment; (such as a stove, microwave, TV, or any appliance that is plugged into a wall) • Unplug it, then it will be a Class A fire. You would be able to use a pressurized water extinguisher after the appliance is unplugged.

  10. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Be Prepared that a Fire Extinguisher will be heavier than it seems. • When you need to use a Fire Extinguisher, remember this ACRONYM. • P.A.S.S • Stand 8-10 feet from the fire • You will feel a kick back once you squeeze the handle. Keep your balance!

  11. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • P – Pull • Pull the pin from the handle of the extinguisher

  12. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • A – Aim • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire

  13. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • S–Squeeze • Squeeze the handle of the extinguisher while aiming the nozzle

  14. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • S – Sweep • Sweep the nozzle from right to left.

  15. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • Once the fire is extinguished, DO NOT turn your back on the extinguished fire • Walk towards the exit while facing the extinguished fire incase it rekindles. • Notify a supervisor immediately to tell them the fire extinguisher was discharged. • The extinguisher will need to be refilled by a trained and certified extinguisher company

  16. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • How to prepare yourself and your coworkers before a fire breaks out: • When your walking around work, take note of where the Fire Extinguishers are placed. • Usually by exit/stairwell doors • Inside kitchens or kitchenettes • Inside Boiler Rooms, Electrical Room, Computer Rooms, etc. • They are spaced out 75’ apart at the most

  17. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • When you see a Fire Extinguisher, make sure its in the proper place. • It should be hanging on a wall or inside a designated, clearly marked cabinet

  18. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • A Fire Extinguisher should never be on the ground or propping a door open.

  19. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • When you see a Fire Extinguisher on the wall or in a cabinet, look to make sure the pressure on the gauge is good. • The arrow should be pointing in the green, not on either side

  20. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • A Fire Extinguisher in a School or Business must be inspected on a yearly basis. • Every 6 years the Extinguisher receives a full maintenance • A Fire Extinguisher in a private residence does not need a professional inspection and service • Twice a year, remember to turn the extinguisher upside down, take a rubber mallet and gently tap the bottom. This will make sure the powder or chemical inside doesn’t cake up.

  21. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • When you see a Fire Extinguisher at your place of business, look at the inspection tag to make sure it has been inspected in the last 12 months.

  22. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • For Instance, if the tag has the year 2011 on it and the month of December is hole punched out, then the extinguisher isn’t due for inspection until December of 2012

  23. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY

  24. FIRE EXTINGUISHER SAFETY • If you see that the pressure gauge is not reading the correct pressure or the tag is out of date, notify a supervisor ASAP. • If you feel there is not a fire extinguisher located in a place that needs it, let a supervisor know.
