Film Ideas for the classroom • Instructional films: have your students teach others how to do something. It might be a recipe, how to play a game, how to build something. They are limited only by their imagination. Easy to plan and execute. • Documentaries: have students create their own documentaries about a significant event or concept you are studying. Students could show people from the country whose language you are learning something about their life, their school, their city, their country.
Film Ideas for the classroom • Music Videos: using karaoke backing music, or live work, students write and record their own song to cover the content they are covering. They then create a video clip to support their song. (eg. Snapshot) • Documenting activities: Schools are very active teaching and learning areas. Document classroom activities, excursions and camps that are conducted, and package them into a film.
Film Ideas for the classroom • Fairy Tales and other stories: students show their creativity by writing and shooting their film, be it based on a fairy tale or something original. • Film Competitions: Film competitions such as that run by ACMI ‘Screen It’, are great opportunities for students to demonstrate their. Look out for competitions to enter, or run your own. Make sure it has a theme to work from. • Snapshot: This is a regional program which is close to my heart. This year we focused on cyber safety and had students create films dealing with this issue. Get involved.

There is a lot more to making a movie than making a movie: • Movie making is good to engage kids but is it improving learning? • Are we just regurgitating facts? • Is there deeper questioning/learning involved? • We need to focus on the purpose.
Preparation: • Story elements: Students need to have some understanding of what makes a good story and how to get across a clear point or message. They need to write a script first. • Visual elements: Students need to know how to create creative/engaging shots. They need to story board the movie. • Camera work: if shooting the footage students need to have an understanding of how to use the camera and camera techniques. Digilearn has a series of lessons called ‘Lights, Camera, Action’ which can support you in teaching this content.
