UNFPA Position on Data • Since its establishment in 1969, UNFPA paid due attention to data collection, analysis, dissemination and utilization in development processes. • This position emerged from its MANDATE in promoting DATA as a requirement for development planning, monitoring and evaluation.
UNFPA Past and current support to DC Shouldered the responsibility of financing and providing technical assistance and building national capacity of the first population census in most countries that did not have a census before.
Extended its support to global and regional data collection beyond censuses; WFS initiated in early 1970s (42 countries world-wide); NHSCP 1980s, PAPCHILD late 80s to late 90s, PAPFAM since 2001. Partnership with DHS
Areas of focus: Demographics Gender Reproductive health Young People PLUS: Housing and living conditions; Socioeconomic;
As well, UNFPA supported Administrative record statistics/ vital registration and statistics RAPID assessment surveys Qualitative research
And; Long term capacity development Establishing regional Demographic Centers Long term fellowships; Master and Ph.D. in recognized Universities world -wide
UNFPA continued to support population censuses and surveys, adjusting modalities to cope with accumulated national, regional and global experiences and with emerging national needs
Assisting countries in resource mobilization Advocacy and policy Dialogue Building and expanding partnerships with development partners Enhancing SOUTH-SOUTH Cooperation TA & Building national and regional capacities
At the regional level, UNFPA works with regional partners to build capacities of specialized Task Forces in various areas of data related issues; Data Processing, in-depth analysis and policy oriented data analysis, population projections, etc.
