Goals-Road Map to Success • The Final Destination is your Long Term Goal. • The Route you take is your Season • The Stops along the way are your Short Term Goals
Long Term Goals • What do you ultimately want to accomplish? • Clearly Define your Long Term Goal. • Recognize your Starting Point.
How Will You Get There? • Talk with your coach about your training plan • What detours and roadblocks are on your route (Vacations, Work…etc.)? • Where are the Big Matches on the schedule?
Short Term Goals Evaluate your progress by setting smaller goals along the way. Long Term Goals, alone, do not provide good feedback or specific directions.
Process Goals • Help focus on the process of performance rather than the outcome. • Positive Examples of Process Goals • Training Goals • Technique Goals • Psychological Goals • Nutritional Goals • Lifestyle Goals
Training Goals • Make sure your Performance Goals match up with what you are willing to do at practice. • Attendance • Intensity • Focus
Technical Goals • Utilize the resources available to you (Coaches/Teammates) Are there changes that need to be made in your technique (Process) to accomplish your Performance Goals?
Psychological Goals • Visualize yourself being successful before practice and competition Be Mentally prepared for competition and practice. Use positive thoughts to motivate yourself.
Nutritional Goals • Access & Utilize good nutritional information (Shippensberg Aquatic Club, 2009) Do your nutritional habits improve your chances of achieving your Performance Goals?
Lifestyle Goals Do the choices you make away from volleyball help you achieve your Performance Goals? Are your Family and friends supportive of your Goals?
Why Set Goals? (Penn, J. 2009) • Provides Direction and Motivation • Where do you want to go? • How to get there? • Get you through the tough practices. • Builds confidence and provides feedback
Goal Setting Tips-SMART • Specific! • General goals do not offer good feedback and are hard to know what you have achieved • Measurable • You set the milestones, make the goal YOURS • Attainable • Hope to Attain & Expect to Attain • Realistic, yet challenging • Too easy or too hard will not be beneficial • Time Based • Evaluate your goals regularly • Gain confidence from your progress • Make it public • Others can help you and make it more difficult to back out (Econ, 2009)
