  2. History • Usually takes place on February 15th • Ancient Romans observed (Lupercalia) a circus-type festival • This festival honored Roman deity • Deity: a divine character or nature, a god or goddess.

  3. History • When Christianity arrived in Rome, it was decided to incorporate these traditions into the new faith instead of abolishing them. • For 40 days before Easter, people would feast, wear masks. It was a carnival celebration. • This tradition has spread over the world.

  4. History • Mardi gras came to America in 1699 by a French explorer • Traditional Mardi Gras colors are green, gold, and purple • Green- symbol of faith • Purple- symbol of justice • Gold- symbol of power
