  4. All parades – probably the most recognizable element of Carnival – are held on public streets. • There are no ticket booths to enter the French Quarter (although an age restriction would probably be a good idea).

  5. What are the official dates for Mardi Gras?

  6. It is a common misperception that Mardi Gras is the start of a couple of weeks of parading and heavy partying. That’s backward! • Mardi Gras is the END, the last day of the partying.

  8. The Carnival season officially begins on Jan. 6th and continues until midnight of Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). • But « Mardi Gras » is also commonly used to refer to the whole Carnival season. • Carnival (carne vale) is Latin for «goodbye meat», i.e. no meat during the 40 days of Lent.

  9. New Orleans, this historically Roman Catholic city, which loves its food and drink more than normal, prepares for the pre-Easter Lent season by partying until the last minute.
