  2. Lisa Hageman • From Buffalo, New York • BA in Mathematics and MS in Adolescent Education • Taught in Aurora Public Schools for three years

  3. Social contract 1. How do you want to be treated by me? • 2. How do you want to treat each other? • 3. How do you think I (teacher) want to be treated by you? • 4. How do we want to treat each other when there is a conflict?

  4. Expectations • Supplies/ being prepared (planner) • Homework (neat, showing complete work) • Advocating for yourself

  5. What a typical class looks like… • Power Up/Skills check • Check homework and go over it • Have lots of student involvement (up at the board, pulling sticks, think-pair-shares, giving thumbs) • Exit slips

  6. Homework • Completion • Effort • Showing work • Two HW passes per semester

  7. Exit slips • One or two questions pertaining to the material we covered that day • Most of the time it’s graded • Students have one week to retake a grade of 6 or less for up to half credit • Quick and easy way for teacher to assess students learning

  8. Example exit slip (Algebra 1) • Complete and copy the table. Then write a function rule for the relationship. • Ken burns 425 calories per hour when he bikes. He bikes 3-7 hours each weekend. Identify the independent and dependent variables, and find a reasonable domain and range.

  9. Students are the mathematicians • Explain their thinking • Justify the answer…Is it reasonable? • Explain it to a classmate

  10. Using data to drive instruction • Exit slips • Tests/quizzes • MAPs • TCAP

  11. Differentiation • Fortunately, math classes at SVA are ability grouped • Different math problems in class • Different homework problems assigned (and quantity)

  12. Decorating the room • Student made posters • Covered up during TCAP
