WELCOME Dr Orna Berry Chairperson Mr Paul Israel Executive Director Welcome to the Israel-Australia, New-Zealand & Oceania Chamber of Commerce (IACC) January-June 2010 Pictorial. The first half of 2010 has seen the Chamber host two major Delegations, a Digital Applications Mission led by Deena Shiff, Group MD- Telstra Business and an Academic Delegation led by Prof. Ed Byrne, Vice-Chancellor & President- Monash University. The IACC has made a concerted effort in actualising the potential of these visits and ensuring they have a major impact on Bi-lateral trade and relations. Telstra and Optus left Israel with approximately 15-20 new opportunities that they are currently pursuing. The University delegates have gone back to Australia and are working hard to not only create Academic Exchanges between Monash and LaTrobe Universities and Institutions here but both Governments have been approached about providing an infrastructure which will enhance Academic Cooperation of real substance. TRADE MISSION TO AUSTRALIA The Chamber is planning a multi-disciplinary Trade Mission to Australia during the week of the 4th of October, where each delegate will receive a personalised itinerary based on his/her corporate needs. The IACC is assessing the viability of offering delegates the opportunity to return to Israel via Shanghai, China for a 3-day extension of the Mission. A real need has been identified whereby Israeli and Australian companies can and should join forces to work together in China! UPCOMING DELEGATIONS TO ISRAEL The 2nd half of 2010 promises to be just as active as the 1st half, in fact as it stands there are @ least four Missions planned! ISDEF- The AICC in Adelaide is looking @ bringing a high-level delegation to attend the International Army & Police Exhibition in mid-October. A week later, the Chamber in WA are organising a Trade Mission titled- Commercialisation, Sustainability & Business Development. Another initiative ,the AICC is planning ,is to build a visit around the EnergyTech Exhibition and Conference also in October and in December the AICC in Sydney is bringing what’s called a ‘Mind of Israel Tour’. Please stay in touch about information for the above mentioned visits plus other new initiatives and of course we’re here to service any query/need you have related to Australia-Israel relations. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Leon Kempler OAM, Chairman- AICC on receiving a Honorary Fellowship from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. DIGITAL APPLICATIONS MISSION LED BY DEENA SHIFF- GROUP MD-TELSTRA BUSINESS MARCH 2010 The focus of the Mission was Digital Applications that will drive the utility of the new NBN- National Broadband Network. The National Broadband Network, is a Fibre to the Home (FTTH) network set to be built in Australia. The Australian Government has established a Government business enterprise, NBN Co Limited, to design, build and operate an Open Access Network providing download speeds of 100 Megabits per second to 90% of Australian homes and businesses, for which it is offering to contribute an initial cash injection of $US38Bil. Telstra Business is responsible for serving the unique needs of Australia's small to medium enterprises (SME), Teltsra is ranked amongst the world’s Top Ten largest Telcos. Other delegates were from Optus (part of the SingTel Group), NEHTA (National E-Health Transition Authority), Church Resources & other leading Australian IT&T firms. Paul Israel- IACC, Kobie Paz, VP Bus. Div. Bezeq, Deena Shiff, Group MD- Telstra Business & Avi Gabbay, CEO- Bezeq Communications (Israel’s main Telco). The delegation with Australian Amb. Andrea Faulkner, were hosted by Yehuda Zisapel, Founder RAD Group. The following RAD Group companies presented- Radcom, Radwin, Wisair, Radvision, Radware & RAD Data. RAD Group is a family of independent companies that develop, manufacture and market solutions for diverse segments of the networking & telecommunications industry. IACC Chairperson- Dr Orna Berry presents a gift to delegate Mark Mulder, GM, Content + Portals, Products + Delivery @ Optus. Optus is Australia’s 2nd largest Telco. Yossi Sela, Managing Partner @ Gemini Israel Funds with Sheila McGregor, Partner @ Gilbert & Tobin. Yossi kindly provided the delegation with an overview of the Israeli High-Tech, VC industries drawing on his vast experiences and successes.

Daria Shualy, CEO- Sense-of-Fashion (SoF) presents to the delegation, an online home for independent fashion designers, trendsetters, fans & shoppers. For designers, SoF provides an online shop with a live clientele base and access to clear & open communication with buyers, fans & other designers. For trendsetters and fashion fans they provide a stage to show off their original styles, favourite designers and shopping decisions. For shoppers, this will be the biggest gallery and shop for independent fashion, including vintage and second hand, but most importantly one-of originals and new unique designs. ACADEMIC DELEGATION LED BY PROF. ED BYRNE AO, VICE-CHANCELLOR & PRESIDENT- MONASH UNIVERSITY JUNE 2010 The objective of the delegation was to strengthen & create academic and research partnerships between Victorian and Israeli universities. The delegates met with over 200 senior Israeli Academics from Tel-Aviv University, Bar-Ilan University, Technion Institute of Technology, Hebrew University, Ben-Gurion Uni. & Weizmann Institute of Science. In addition, visits were paid to the Media & Innovation Lab @ IDC and the Tel-Aviv-Jaffa Academic College. Monash is Australia's largest university with over 56,000 students & 15,000 staff. Ranked by the THES at 45th of the world's top 200 universities, Monash is home to Australian Synchrotron, the Australian Stem Cell Centre, 100 research centres and 17 co-operative research centres. La Trobe University is a multi-campus university in Victoria, Australia with nearly 3,000 staff and 30,000 students La Trobe is particularly renowned for its prowess in the Arts & humanities & has a strong international reputation in Biomedicine & Science, ranking it in the top 100 biomedicine universities in the world. ACADEMIC DELEGATION LED BY PROF. ED BYRNE AO, VICE-CHANCELLOR & PRESIDENT- MONASH UNIVERSITY JUNE 2010 The Mission, which consisted of 14 senior executive and research staff from Monash and La Trobe Universities, primarily focused on scientific and biomedical research collaborations, particularly in water sustainability, structural biology, cancer medicine, plant biotech and bio-informatics. Alongside these key themes, delegates also explored opportunities to strengthen existing partnerships in Jewish Studies, the humanities and social sciences, and to examine the approach that Israeli institutions take towards social inclusion. For Monash and La Trobe, collaborations were either formed or strengthened between individual academics and researchers and between universities. The two universities have established a high level committee to ensure that the opportunities identified during our visit will be given maximum leverage to enable them to be brought to fruition. The delegation @ the Tel-Aviv-Jaffa Academic College. Situated in Jaffa, in the heart of a diverse neighbourhood of Arabs and Jews, the College is committed to the development of opportunities for Jaffa residents. Outreach programs already exist, establishing the College as a venue for communal interaction, understanding and growth for residents of all ages, and from every sector of the community. Leon Kempler- AICC, Saul Singer, Co-Author- ‘Start-Up Nation’ & Dr Orna Berry- IACC Start-Up Nation analyses how Israel, with no natural resources—produces more start-up companies than large & robust nations- Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, & the UK. Delegates @ the PrattPark of the Australian Soldier in Be’er-Sheva. The centrepiece of the Park is a memorial commemorating the last great cavalry charge in war – the charge of Be’er-Sheva by the Australian Light Horse on 31 October 1917. CORPORATE VISITS Leon Kempler- AICC, Gail Kelly, CEO- Westpac Banking Group, Prof. Stanley Fischer, Governor- Bank of Israel & Ronnie Hezkiyahu, Bank Comptroller. The Bank of Israel played an important role guarding the Israeli economy from the effects of the global financial crisis. The Swiss Institute for Management Development (IMD) ranked BOI the highest among central banks for its efficient functioning. Led by Chairman, Gary Cohen & senior executives from iSOFT visited Israel looking @ potential JV opportunities. Here with Chamber Chairperson- Dr Orna Berry & Dr Itzik Peterburg. iSOFT(ASX: ISF) are one of the world’s biggest providers of advanced application software solutions for the entire healthcare industry. Australian Ambassador HE Faulkner @ Zenith Solar with Green Earth Energy, Director- Rob Annells, Ruvi Herzog from Herzog Group & Executives from Zenith Solar. ZenithSolar with its origins in Australia, it is developing a modular and easily scalable high concentration photovoltaic system (HCPV). The system provides high electrical output concurrently with heat at temperatures ranging from those associated with domestic hot water to those suited to process heat - that can address vertical cogeneration applications. Dr. Yoel Zeron, Professional Manager- Sion (world leading company for Artificial Insemination & Breeding) with Joe Lederman, Managing Principal @ FoodLegal. The Israeli dairy cattle population has the highest mean milk & milk solid production in the world, even though dairy production conditions are suboptimal due to heat stress in most areas during most of the year. Israeli bulls transmit outstanding genetic ability for milk yield and milk components and excel in fertility, longevity and udder health trait.
POLITICAL VISITS Hon Dr Graham Jacobs MP, WA Minister for Water & Mental Health , Peter Abetz MLA with Idan Ofer, Chairman of Better Place. Project Better Place is a venture-backed company that aims to reduce global dependency on petroleum through the creation of a market-based transportation infrastructure that supports electric vehicles. Gilad Erdan MK, Israel’s Minister of Environmental Protection with The Hon Jay Weatherill MP, South Australia’s Min. for Environment & Conservation. Minister Weatherill visited Israel on a JNF Study Tour . Jewish National Fund is a global environmental organisation, based in Israel. It has planted 240 million trees, built over 200 reservoirs & dams, developed over 250,000 acres of land, & created more than 1,000 parks. Dr Mark Hulett, School of Molecular Sciences- LaTrobe Uni. Simon Fisher, Director- Save-a-Child’s-Heart, Paul Israel- IACC, Dennis Hood MLC, Head of Family First Party (SA) & Grant Mitchell, Partner- Minter Ellison Lawyers. Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) is an Israeli- based international humanitarian project, whose mission is to improve the quality of pediatric cardiac care for children from developing countries who suffer from heart disease. The Chamber organised a Business briefing for an AIJAC sponsored delegation of Labour MPs- Hon Joel Fitzgibbon MP (NSW), Senator Donald Farrell (SA), Yvette D'Ath MP (QLD), Belinda Neal MP (NSW), John Della Bosca, NSW MLC & Christopher Hayes MP (NSW).
VISITORS Kirstin Martens, Senior Project Officer, Monitoring & Management- Government of South Australia, Department of Water, Land & Biodiversity Conservation, Simon Marcou with David Pargament- Hayarkon River Authority & Australian Ambassador. Pargament led the rehabilitation of the Hayarkon River, a model studied by peers worldwide. The Australian Psychological Society organised a Study Mission to Israel initiated by Prof., Erica Frydenberg Melbourne Graduate School of Education & Dr Amanda Gordon, Director- Armchair Psychology Practice. The objectives of the visit included learning about the treatment in Israel of those suffering mental health problems such as Post-Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD) and also learn from Israel’s experience in cross-culture Psychology, in relation to academic & social adjustment of people from all parts of the world. Twenty midshipmen and officer cadets from the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) visited as part of the first ADFA battlefield study tour to Israel. Andrew Stead of ATP- Australia’s largest and most successful Incubator. Andrew visited Israel to see and learn about the Israeli Technological Incubator system. NAB YACHAD SCHOLARSHIP DR ANNA LAVELLE, CEO AUSBIOTECH Anna visited Israel as part of the YACHAD National Australia Bank (NAB) Scholarship which is a Joint Venture between NAB and the Australian Jewish Community, the aim is to send high profile and respected Australians from diverse backgrounds- Academia, Media, Government & Business to visit Israel and conduct an in-depth study of a particular field/topic. Anna's specific interest was to search for partnership opportunities, model policy frameworks, effective government and private sector programs in the Bio-Tech sector. AusBiotech is Australia's Biotechnology Industry Organisation, which represents over 3,000 members, covering the human health, agricultural, medical device, bioinformatics, environmental and industrial sectors in biotechnology. AusBiotech is dedicated to the development, growth and prosperity of the Australian Biotechnology Industry, by providing initiatives to drive sustainability and growth, outreach and access to markets, and representation and support for members nationally and around the world. Dr Anna Lavelle with her Israeli counterpart- Ruth Alon, Head- ILSI- Israel Life Science Industry. Ruth is also a Partner @ one of Israel’s largest VC funds- Pitango, managing in excess of $US1.3Bil in committed capital. Ms. Alon is the force behind the establishment of ILSI, a not-for-profit organisation representing the mutual goals of approx. 630 Israeli life science companies. Prof. Noam Gavriely, Founder- Karmelsonix with Dr Anna Lavelle. Karmelsonix is an unique Australia/Israel JV listed on the ASX:KSX, it focuses on supplying innovative non-invasive acoustic tools for disease management of asthma & related pulmonary disorders. Dr Lavelle @ Evogene, a world leader in delivering improved plant traits to the agbio industry through the use of a continuously improving proprietary platform combining state-of-the-art computational genomics, molecular biology and advanced breeding methods. @ the Weizmann Institute of Science. Weizmann been voted the best university in the world for life scientists to conduct research. As a research Institute, Weizmann earns the highest amount of royalties per annum in the world.

During the WATEC Conference/Exhibition, the Chamber organsied a Reception held in honour of the Australian, Californian & Indian Cleantech Delegations. The Californians were led by Mr David Nahai, Senior Adviser- Clinton Climate Initiative & Bob Blumenfield, California Assembly Member. The Indian delegation was led by Mangesh R. Gupte, Head of India’s largest Infrastructure company- Hindustan. The Chamber hosted a senior Water/Cleantech Delegation, led by NSW Minister for Water- Phil Costa MP & South Australian Chief Scientist- Dr Ian Chessel. Delegates included- Katarina Hodgkinson, NSW Shadow Min. for Water, SA Commissioner for Water Security- Robyn McLeod & representatives from- Sydney Water, CSIRO, AUSTRADE, University of Melbourne, Enviss, Alano Water & more. ASIA PACIFIC NZ FM McCully with Paul Israel- IACC. NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCully @ the Opening of an ANZAC Memorial in Ness-Ziona. Israel’s Vice PM Silvan Shalom and other dignitaries attended the event. Hon. Lorin Robert- Micronesian Minister Foreign Affairs, Hon Manny Mori, President- Micronesia, Dr Orna Berry- IACC & Hon. Kieren Keke, Foreign Minister of Nauru. Ms. Jane Diplock, Chairman of the NZ Securities Commission & Chairman of the Executive Committee of the International Organisation of Securities Commission visited Israel and met with key local fund managers. Pio Bosco Tikoisuva Fiji High Commissioner is welcomed to Israel. An AIJAC delegation of Indonesian journalists met Dror Strum, Director- Israeli Institute for Economic Planning, Dov Moran, CEO- MoDu (and Founder of M-Systems) plus the Head of Asia Operations for Netafim. The Chamber held a dinner in honour of Peter Hamilton, Deputy Secretary- NZ Min. of Foreign Affairs & Trade with guests from Alvarion (WiMax), Ormat (Geo-Thermal) & Poalim Capital Markets (Investment Banking). An AIJAC delegation of Thai officials received a briefing on Project Better Place.
NOT-FOR-PROFITS The launch of the Goshen Project held in the presence of Dr Ron Finkel, Head of Australian Friends of Hadassa and Professor Frank Oberklaid, Director of the Centre for Community Child Health at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melb. & participant in the AusIMed Research Fund. The Goshen Program aims to train pediatricians for leadership positions in community pediatrics. It aims to have an impact on children’s health nationally, working at a policy level with government and with other agencies to promote children’s health and development; and at a local level. In addition, the training is designed to improve the practice of pediatrics by increasing the skills of pediatricians in developmental and behavioural pediatrics, and the assessment and management of conditions comprising ‘the new morbidity’. Ron & Dina Goldschlager host a dinner in honour of ‘Big Brothers Big Sisters’ which aims to help children reach their potential through one-to-one relationships with mentors that have a measurable impact on youth. Chamber Chairperson- Dr Orna Berry gave an Israeli Economic Overview to an UIA (Keren-Hayasod) Family Mission. UIA, in partnership with the global Jewish community, works to further the national priorities of the State of Israel. Its mission focuses on three main areas: Strengthening Israeli society, Facilitating Immigration (Aliyah) & Absorption and furthering Jewish Zionist Education. Carmela & Brian Dixon with Israeli Model and Winner of Israeli Survivor competition- Noam Tur. Brian Dixon, Founder of the famous Life-Be-In-It campaign, is today a Director @ TAFISA- The Association For International Sport for All.
