  1. Lecture 1 DESIGN: An Overview 1

  2. What is Design? • Everyone is directly or indirectly involved in Design: • Planning • Execute • Refine 2

  3. Some Definitions “Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision making process (often iterative), in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.” ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) • “Engineering design is a purposeful activity directed toward the goal of fulfilling human needs, particularly those which can be met by the technological factors of our culture.” • Asimow, M., Introduction to Design, • Prentice Hall, Englewood Cliffs, NJ, 1962 3

  4. satisfying Why Design? “Need” 4

  5. Human Needs COMPLEX: Changes over time – different products over time Varyacross cultures, gender, age groups, income level, climates, etc 5

  6. Process of satisfying… “It is a process of searching for solutions to satisfy human needs that requires right methods/techniques” • Correct understanding of NEEDS • CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE Solutions • QUALITY achievement 6

  7. CREATIVE vs. INNOVATIVE • CREATIVE – having the ability to produce new and original ideas and things (that may or may not be useful) INNOVATIVE – having the ability to introduce something new, like an idea, or method or invention (that is often useful) 7
