The Good Thing: The Atom Smashers Robotics Team at Johnson H.S. • Meets twice weekly at Johnson H.S., more frequently in January and February. • Compete in FIRST Robotics Competition where the team receives design criteria, and the team has 6 weeks to develop a robot to compete. Placed first in the Peachtree regional, then 43 out of 73 teams at the national. Why is it special? Why do we need more things like this? • Participation can be a life-changing, career-molding experience to high school team members. • Provides mentoring and vision for career path in science and technology through team activity and volunteers from organizations such as Gulfstream and GTREP. • Gives youth practical, hands on, mechanical, electrical and computer skills. • Purposefully teaches “gracious professionalism”. • Robotics competition fosters themes of sportsmanship and good citizenship. • High school youth lead a program at the middle school based on their program. • Several adult volunteers are planning to use their volunteer experience to establish similar programs in other Savannah schools. • To note, I learned about this team at the Coastal BETA Awards in October. When asked “for the envelope please”, the announcer was handed an envelope by the Atom Smasher Robotics Team robot.
