What is a Word Wall? • A list of words arranged in alphabetical order. • Words are grouped by: • First letter • Topic • Unit • Root word origins
What words do you use to ‘Build’ a word wall? • Commonly misspelled or misused words • Content words: Words that are important to your content area
Building your word wall • Word cards • Use large block letters • Cards should no smaller than 4 x 6 • You can try experimenting with color • just keep in mind the shades some may be hard for students to see.
Word Wall Rules • Locate ‘wall’ area to post the word wall. • Things to remember when selecting a location for your word wall: • Can be seen from by a seated student • Think outside the box on where to put the word wall (ex. On the ceiling, between the boards) • How to attach the word cards • remember the words will be moving on the list • “Use your word wall daily” (Fisher, 141) • Inform your students and remind them that these words should be spelled correctly on assignments.
