  3. Starter: How many different styles can you name from each decade? • On the paper – write down as many styles as you can. • Try to match the style with the decade it first came into existence. • Research it to check (choose a handful for each pair)

MTV • Launched 1 August 1981 • The first music video shown on MTV was The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star“ • Within a couple of months, record stores in areas where MTV was available were selling music that local radio stations were not playing, such as Men at Work, Bow Wow Wow, and Human League • The orginal tagline: "You'll never look at music the same way again,“ The rise of the Pop Video

Hip hop • US – use of sampling technology – easier to use than twin turntables • North part of New York – Bronx at the end of the 70s • Urban graffiti, dancing, party music played by DJs • Takes ideas from Jamaica and using MCs to host events • DJs repeated breaks, MCs improvised spoken lyrics or poetry – rap • DJ KoolHerc, AfrikaBambaataa • Grandmaster Flash- introduced scratching • Sugar Hill Records specialists in rap music • 1st commercial hip-hop hit – Rapper’s Delight (Sugarhill Gang in 1979)

Heavy metal • Kiss, Aerosmith, Motorhead, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, DefLeppard, Twisted Sister, Metallica, Megadeth • Sub-genres formed – death metal, black metal, power metal, gothic metal • Grew from psychedlic rock and blues rock • Fast tempo • Powerful bass lines • Large drum kits • Electric guitar – power chords, low-pitched riffs • Lyrics often based upon fantasy, mythological figures • Black T shirts and long hair – think Max!

  21. Club and Street Mix • In mid ’70s popular dance music by Bee Gees. Traditional dance music started to sound uniform and anonymous • New technology gave ability to produce clean,hard, repetitive drum beats ideal for dancing – Donna Summer. • In Britain, in 1980s Gary Numan, Heaven 17, Spandau Ballet, Human League used synthesisers and tapes to make futuristic pop and dance music

America and Britain in the ’80s • In America ‘rap’ came up from streets of New York and Chicago – performers shouted lyrics over music often taken from other records. • Technique known as ‘scratching’ was incorporated, followed later by ‘sampling’. • House music established in Britain during mid to late 80s – gospel style vocals, heavy bass and drums • Acid House evolved around Ibiza and non-stop dancing en mass.

  23. Acid House and Rave • Clothing was baggy, dungarees, beach wear • Techno music – intense, hypnotic and ear splitting • Dance music dominated up to early ’90s • Raves became popular – government tried to stop them – dancing became a political act. • Growing interest in Asian dance music

Development of technology • Advances in the synthesiser – polyphonic synths (presets, memory locations and on board effects) • Yamaha – Digital FM snths – DX7(1983) – electronic piano and marimba sounds • Roland – D-50 (1987) – linear arithmetic synthesis (beginning of a sound is sampled and normal analogue oscillators produce the rest) • 1980 – Simmons electronic drums • 1981 – Roland TR-808 analogue drum machine • E-Mu Emulator II keyboard workstation - affordable sampler able to produce 8 sounds simultaneously • Aftertouch added to synths – change a sound by applying pressure to a key after it is depressed
