Introduction to the UT/DLS • Home page: <http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/datalib/> • 3 major functions: • Acquire data to support research and teaching at University of Toronto (ie avoid duplicate acquisitions and loss of expensive resources) • Facilitate access to and usability of data resources • Archive original research for the University of Toronto (until we have a national data archive in Canada)

Introduction to the UT/DLS (cont’d) • >100,000 files of (primarily) quantitative research data and statistics in ca 5,000 titles • Almost none are listed in the UTL catalogue (use our Google custom search instead) • <20% of our data/statistics are available on-line • UT/DLS maintains subscriptions for the University to: • Consortia: DLI (Statistics Canada), ICPSR, Roper, etc • Macro-economic databases: CANSIM, WB, OECD, IMF, DRI Basic Economics, Datastream, etc • Financial databases: CRSP, COMPUSTAT, CCM, FPCD, FPMF, TSX CFMRC, etc

Licenses and legalities • DLS acquires data on behalf of the University of Toronto community: • Free resources (eg PISA) - unrestricted • Subscriptions: CRSP, COMPUSTAT, FPCD, CFMRC, etc. Licensed to: University of Toronto faculty, students, and staff for academic research and teaching purposes only. • Consortial acquisitions: DLI (Statistics Canada), ICPSR, Roper, spatial resources, etc. Licensed to: University of Toronto faculty, students, and staff for academic research and teaching purposes only.

Statistics Canada disseminates data under 4 license classes: • Unrestricted files accessible on STC web site • DSP (Depository Services Program): anyone can use, but not freely accessible on the web – accessible from STC, DSP, and UT/DLS web sites with a UT IP address • DLI (Data Liberation Initiative): University of Toronto faculty, students, and staff for academic research and teaching purposes only -accessible from UT/DLS web site only with a UT IP address • Custom products ($$$) – licensed only to payee

How Statistics Canada determines use appropriate under the DLI license (in brief): • Who is the user: Does your paycheque come from [or tuition cheque go to] the University of Toronto payroll office/registrar? • What is the purpose: Does the funding for your research come through the University of Toronto Research office? • Answered ‘no’ to either/both of the above? Time-series resources • Socio-economic and financial time-series databases <http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/datalib/major/ecofin.htm> • Includes links to subscription resources • Macro-economic: CANSIM, WDI, IFS, SourceOECD, Citibase /Basic Economics, Datastream, etc • Financial databases: TSX CFMRC, FPCD, FPMF, CRSP, COMPUSTAT etc

Microdata resources • Subject-based lists: • Major research data collections <http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/datalib/major/major.htm> • On-line access: • SDA interface: basic analyses & download with SAS, SPSS, or Stata syntax <http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/datalib/major/sda.htm> [same interface used by ICPSR, Roper, IPUMS, etc] • Nesstar interface via <odesi>: download SAS, SPSS, Stata system files http://odesi.scholarsportal.info/ • Resources that are not available on-line need to be requested
