On the last day of school in July 2007, 14 pupils and 8 members of staff set off on their annual school trip to WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK. It was a journey that none would forget!!. At 4pm they left West Midlands as planned. BUT. By 6pm – the time they were expected to arrive back in school.

Scenario • You are part of a Flood Management Team who has been called out to the town of Tewkesbury in Gloustershire (40 miles from the Welsh border). • Thousands of commuters are caught up in traffic and chaos for miles around as it approaches ‘rush hour’ on a Friday evening. • An helicopter is in the air sending back reports. It is your job to collect the reports, send the school minibus to a safe pace using the map and make the crucial decisions to manage the whole situation.
The roles • The Information co-ordinator. You will need to collect all the information from the teleprinter and pass it on to the Flood Crisis Manager • The Flood Crisis Manager You are in charge of making the critical decisions. Once the Information co-ordinator has passed you the information you have to quickly make a decision on the ‘risk assessment sheet’ • The Route Finder You will need to select 3 places for the school minibus to spend the night just in case they can’t get home.

A Safe Place to Lay The Mayor has requested that the team work together to prepare a map that provides possible locations for the school minibus to rest for the night. Remember – they have to be able to get through. Red zone: Could be hard to get too but a safe place offering warmth, food and shelter for the teachers and pupils. Amber zone: Should be easier to get too but maybe not the most suitable for teachers and pupils. Green zone: This area is considered to be easy to get too but have very few facilities for teachers and pupils.
