  2. “The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic.” - Joseph Stalin

  3. made by Ivan Parmakov Can Entrepreneurship Improve Africa’s Wellbeing Development?

  4. Why Entrepreneurship?

  5. What Entrepreneurship is? • Entrepreneurship is the process whereby an individual or a group of individuals use organized efforts and means to pursue opportunities to create value and grow by fulfilling wants and needs through innovation and uniqueness, no matter what resources are currently controlled (Coulter 2000).

  6. Why did I choose Africa?

  7. Number of children per family

  8. Entrepreneurship in Africa • Countries in Africa are on the bottom line of new firm-creation rankings • Firm-creation density index – just 0.58 (compared to about 4 in developed countries) • 63.6% of the population has engaged in only 4.3% of Total Entrepreneurial Activity

  9. What does it take to start a business in Africa? On average to start a new business in Africa it requires: • 9 procedures • 39 days to complete those procedures • 36.5% of income per capita to pay for the procedures • Corporate tax of 46.5% from the earnings

  10. Political Stability • Average political stability index is -0.15 and it’s negative in almost all African countries • In addition, corruption levels are really high • Poverty leaves no choice to ordinary people, then to engage in the black and grey sectors of the economy, which are associated with drugs, guns, illegal trade of ivory and diamonds

  11. Causal Relationships From all those data, it is clear that there are a number of reasons for the Total Entrepreneurial Activity in Africa to be in such low levels: • Clumsy and expensive procedures • High costs to start a business • High taxes, once the business is started • Unstable political environment • High level of corruption

  12. Conclusion Entrepreneurship is a great tool in the modern world and had helped many countries achieve higher GDP by simply creating new entities, which add value. However, Entrepreneurship requires a certain type of environment in order to work out. Unfortunately, that sort of environment currently does not exist in Africa and in order for the implementation of Entrepreneurship to work, a change in the people’s values, political system, culture and traditions is needed first.

  13. Thank you for you attention!
