What is Persuasion? Persuasion in the process of gliding people toward believing in an idea, action, or attitude. Often manipulates facts and opinions Got Milk?
Where You See Persuasion: • Commercials • Ads • Brochures • Magazines • College Pamphlets • Letter to the Editor • Newspaper
Ways YOU use persuasion: • If you let me go out, I will… • Everybody is going so you should let me go… • I have never gotten in trouble before… • I will drive my little brother if I can borrow the car • I will pay you back if you loan me $50 • You should let me… because…
Purpose • Convince someone of your point of view • Let them know why they should believe what you want them to believe and hop on your “bandwagon”
Get People Thinking! Persuasive writing gets people thinking about a certain side to an issue, idea, or theory. Present new facts that others may not know about, or may not have thought about.
Have an Agenda • What are you really trying to get people to think? • Keep it focused on that topic only • What DON’T you want them to think? • Avoid adding information that may introduce people to alternate ways of thinking about a topic other than what you believe. Advertisements, movies, commercials, politicians, critics and spokespeople all have an agenda in mind when presenting information to you.
Know Your Audience • Supportive audience: you start with their support EX: a republican presidential candidate at a republican rally/convention • Uncommitted audience: neutral EX: jury C. Indifferent audience: have to get them to pay attention EX: a student who wants to drop out and you have to convince them its important • Opposed audience: against you before you start EX: convincing students to want more homework
The other side is WRONG • The goal of using persuasion is to not only convince someone that you’re right, but that people with the other point of view are wrong. • Know the sides of your issue, but know WHY you don’t agree with them, too. • Know how to refute counter arguments
Appeal to Your Audience • There are three ways of appealing to your audience: • ETHOS: Personal Credibility (Greek for “character”) • You are a well informed, expert on the topic. You are not ranting, rather, research is used. We tend to believe those whom we respect. • LOGOS: Logical (Greek for “word”) • Facts, statistics, examples, definition, cite sources, legitimate reasons. • PATHOS: Emotional (Greek for “suffering”) • - plays off of audience’s feelings • Ex: love, anger, disgust, fear, passion, patriotism
Motivation • You must motivate the audience and impact their attitude or behavior • People do things because it satisfies a need or desire • Fear also motivates people • If people are afraid of the consequences or outcomes, they might be more likely to believe or act as you do.
Things to Avoid: • Don’t lecture the audience • Don’t make threats or “bully” your reader • Don’t employ guilt trips (“If you don’t do this, …) • Be careful about using the second person, “you” • You don’t want to assume things about your audience that may not be true
