Goals of the Initiative • An operational framework to assess governance and evaluate progress over time • Improve communication and create space for environmental and social voices • Build the capacity of major groups and governments to practice good governance • Complement efforts to advance public interests
The Indonesia Assessment has Improved Transparency • The Indonesian House of Representatives, website now features • agenda • list of work in progress • list of legislation passed • public message board for participation
Thai Assessment Draws Attention to EGAT Corporatization Process • Demonstrated that the process did not protect against abuses of power • lack of a regulatory body to balance stakeholder interests was a serious problem
Next Steps • Progress • 2003 – 2004: Develop and Review Pilot Indicator Toolkit • 2005: Pilot Assessments in India, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines • 2006: EGI Forum Upcoming: • Final revisions to the toolkit • Analysis of the results of the pilot phase and approach
