Origins of NODA Sandra Clark, RN at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon Formal program started in 2001
Why start a NODA program? • Because no one should die alone! • We have a large population with little support or family in our area.
Who do we need involved? Hospital(s) Nursing staff Committee Volunteers
NODA Volunteers: Compassionate Companions • Committed to the program • At least 18 years old • Must attend orientation session • Must sign volunteer agreement
NODA Patients: No friends/family Less than 72 hours to live DNR Comfort care Varying states of awareness Variety of diagnoses Consent
Initiating a NODA referral • Nurse calls Point of Contact (POC) • POC calls Phone Coordinator • Phone Coordinator: - Calls nurse for additional info - Schedules Compassionate Companions (CCs) - Checks for status and updates everyone
What happens next? • Phone coordinator briefs the CC • Get bag to patient’s room • First Companion: - Arrives at hospital ASAP - Goes to nursing unit; speaks to patient’s nurse - Accompanies nurse to patient’s room
Being with the patient • Hold their hand, talk, listen, read • Spiritual support • Comfort measures • Give permission to die It is ok to do NOTHING for the patient other than being present … sometimes this is the BEST option.
