Mentorship WORDS THAT MATTER BY Godfrey K. Mititi
Benefits of My proposed plan • When comparing my capabilities and proposed solution to my fellow mentors, I stand out as; • An experienced mentor having traversed all the eight provinces currently referred to as counties. • Improved programme model • Cost effective since for now it is treated as voluntary programme. • Short time to completion • Reliable mentor • Exposed to both the government and private sector • Ethically proven background of the mentor • Free ICT lectures and guidelines
Competitive advantage • The following are competitive advantage that distinguishes Godfrey from other career mentors • Industry recognition-Godfrey has been in this mentorship industry for over ten years and has been recognised by a number of schools/mentees (Visited Kisumu girls, Moichebisas Boys, Shanzu TTC, Embu urban primary, Isiolo boys, Jamhuri high, Chief Koinange girls, Mukumu Boys among others. • Trust; be sure this takes time to build, but Godfrey has built the same and has maintained high standards of trust all through including mentoring teenage girls from boarding school. (Tabaka Girls) • Brand Identity; working for Safaricom has given Godfrey the necessary brand. He has shared what it’s that makes safaricom famous. Lectured the same to Laikipia University ICT students in Maralal campus • Integrity-Having been the iconic Secretary General of NYS Engineering Catholic Association for 3 years and still an active Alumni, Godfrey has demonstrated that Honesty is the word of the street. Mentors NYS Engineering students every year during their annual prayer day. • Expertise & Stability-Godfrey has attended several workshops, team building exercises, project management lectures, as a delegate to the Youth Employment Summit, having gone through the National Youth Service (NYS) understands better the needs and challenges of the young people.
Competitive advantage cnt’d • Technological skills-This is not in doubt as the employer (company) he is working for is the chief spear header of technological innovations and inventions. Use of mobile technology to clear work log, use of Tab to take notes and paperless transactions are part of his daily chores • History of Success-it is not only working in big companies that have propelled Godfrey to stable status. It’s the focus, discipline, hardwork and prayer that have. The desire to keep improving self every day. Godfrey has inspired so many and among others keeps in touch with Vincent keongo-Electrical Engineering student Kimathi University, Dennis Amos-ICT student Technical university of Mombasa, Allan Ondara –Aeronautical engineering-TUK, Vincent Koech-ICT LaikipiaUniv, Catherine Jelagat –ICT Eld University, Felix Keongo-Electrical Engineering-KimathiUniv, among others. Not forgetting the top crème student from Keminini Academy-Felix Sagini-of Obera Sec School I am an annual guest to Keminini Academy for mentorship session to this primary school There are so many others who are currently working and whose life has changed from my mentorship. Guy like Dennis makori, had lost hope, after his father died, and brothers refused to pay his school fees, he kept coming to me for mentorship, I guided him well and assisted along. Currently this gentleman who is an electrical technician has changed the face of his home. • Customer Service-Godfrey offers first class service and distinguishes himself with etiquette. You can reach him 24/7 on his cellphone, but encourages text messages , email messages or whatsapp chats due to the nature of his assignments since at times he is on the wheels-driving
Distinguish yourself • Being a part of a commodity crowd erodes your value. • Care and treat as if your own • Be passionate about anything-studies, job, business, hobbies and be willing to make a difference • Build strong relationships. i.e. belong somewhere; build trust in them, for it takes long to build but can be destroyed in no time.
DREAMS • Dream Big-keep imagining. It doesn’t cost you • A real Dream is not what you see in sleep, but its the thing which doesn’t let you sleep. • In your dreams, set the right expectations; under-promise and over-deliver
HELP • Ask for help-There is much more help than you need. In Engineering we say go to manual, or surf in the web, or ask/call a friend otherwise “personal admin” referred to as personal instincts- using your own manoeuvres will do. • Its said its not what you know, but who you know. Move around and know who can help and when. • Be ready to help too. Don't be selfish.
Celebrations • Celebrate small victories, its then you will climb a ladder. Will encourage you to work extra harder • Quiz: why do you get upset for a simple failure? • Smart people know that: • Failure is the stepping stone of success • Its not falling but ability to stand up (resilience) that matter • A bend in the road is not the end of the road
Setting Standards • Set higher standards-Demand more from yourself like great sportsmen-Yego, Usain Bolt... • Never accept anything that comes way, because regrets are numerous • Until you get what you want, never STOP.. • QUITTERS never WIN and WINNERS never QUIT
CORE VALUES • Know what you deserve, and go for it • Pursue right memberships/clubs/societies-they will market you on your behalf. • ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS; E.g. What can I learn from this? Not why is it happening to me • What are the tricks of survival not why am I here
INSPIRATION • Engage with a coach/mentor/role model • Quote: no team can win without great players, but great players can lose a game...if not well coached. • Learn to listen and of course be a keen observant. • Get back on your feet fast during your try to gain perfection
