Arms Race • After WWII both nations increased weapons possessions including nuclear weapons • Disarmament talks were held to reduce the threat of nuclear war • A.B.M.’s were a major threat due to their ability to offer safety and cause nations to attack • Détente(1970s)… relaxed period between U.S. and Soviet Union
Cuban Missile Crisis Fidel Castro • Led a revolution and became Cuba’s leader in 1959 • Bay of Pigs Invasion- JFK attempted to overthrow the regime, but failed • The Soviets sent nuclear missiles to Cuba and the U.S. blockaded island…NikitaKhrushchev later removed the missiles
