Theological Virtues • Virtues or habits given to us by God, “Theos,” to help us to keep God at the center of our lives. • These special virtues of faith, hope, and love lead us to “know, love, and trust God.” (p. 116 in Christ Our Life textbook) • Faith—belief in God and all that has revealed to us through Church teachings • Hope—trust that God will give us eternal life and all the help necessary for us to get there • Despair and Presumption are sins against Hope • Charity—also known as love; helps us to love God and put Him first in our lives
Cardinal Virtues • These virtues, also known as the “hinge” virtues, are acquired through human effort. They are important if we want to lead a holy life. “They are habits that allow us to do good acts and to give the best of ourselves.” (p. 116 textbook) • Prudence– directs us to decide what is good, seek advice, and reflect on acts before we act • Justice– guides us to respect the rights of others; also makes us want to do something to protect the rights of others • Fortitude—gives us the courage to do what is right even when it is difficult; means being patient, generous, putting up with teasing, and ignoring peer pressure • Temperance—helps us to control our desire for pleasure; stops us from overdoing it in eating, drinking, sex, money, and the way we dress, act, and speak
