Independent scrutiny of winter resilience The majority of airports face regular independent review of their winter resilience, for many on an annual basis Question: Has your airport ever faced a formal review as a result of concerns about your Winter Operations Preparedness? What were the outcomes and how did you respond?

Independent scrutiny of winter resilience For Northern airports snow and winter conditions are very much ‘business as usual’, making a strong Winter Operations plan a foregone conclusion But no one is complacent and all managers are open to improve their readiness Formal reviews are always a prompt for action Sometimes their recommendations are very helpful, triggering enhanced attention and investment Question: Has your airport ever faced a formal review as a result of concerns about your Winter Operations Preparedness? Snow Planning Before I came to this conference, I thought our snow planning was good - but after hearing discussion, I know it’s only just satisfactory European Airport Manager We are working to be ready for the worst case scenario. By making substantial investment 10 years ago we reduced runway closure time from 45 to 22 minutes Canadian Airport Executive We produce a new Snow Plan before each winter. There is a whole spectrum of conditions and many different types of snow’ Central Europe Airport Manager Staff retention builds experience and that experience is hard to find. No one has put a cost to that experience Winter Operations Consultant Question: How well prepared is your airport in the Snow Planning area? Winter operatives are generally employed on a seasonal basis. What impact, if any, does this have on your Snow Planning operations? Would it be viable to employ full time operatives in this area?

Ground clearing equipment – dream scenario • We asked delegates to dream their perfect piece of ground clearing kit …. and they told us : • Software that provides dependable and reliable read-out of conditions • Enhanced visual communication between clearance vehicles • Equipment with high ground clearance for deep snow • Equipment to weigh aircraft prior to take off • Anti collision device on aircraft steps • Smaller more nimble clearance vehicles • Powerful snow dispersal equipment Question: Close your eyes for a moment.
