Balancing Redox Equations (the half-reaction method) Divide the reaction into half-reactions. Balance elements other than H, O. Balance O by adding water molecules. Balance H by adding hydrogen ions. Balance charge by adding electrons. Recombine the two half-reactions after multiplying each by the appropriate integer which allows the electrons to cancel. (for basic conditions) Add hydroxide ions to each side so as to eliminate hydrogen ions from the equation.
