Where It All Began....1820-1892 • The word heterosexual did not exist at this time. The terms “true womanhood” and “true manhood” which just described gender characteristics • In 1868 Karl Kertbeny coined the terms heterosexual and homosexual in private conversation which he later used the word homosexuality in public to reform sodomy laws. He used heterosexuality in 1880 in defense of homosexuality. Source: Google Images
The First Years of Heterosexuality (1892-1900) • Dr. James Kiernan brought the terms heterosexuality and homosexuality to the US in 1892 but the terms are used differently than today. • Heterosexual was the erotic feelings for a different sex. • Homosexual was erotic feelings for the same sex. • Psycho-sexual hermaphroditism as the inclinations to both sexes and resorted to abnormal methods of gratification. Heterosexual Mystique(1900-1982) • Heterosexuality was redefined as the procreant urge linked to unstoppable lust. • The lesbian was now present and defined as a women’s lust and passionate romantic friendships with women. • The term heterosexuality emerged from medical circles to mainstream vocabulary. • Heterosexuality was established as hegemonic. • A world view that made homosexuals especially lesbians invisible put stress on heterosexuality. Heterosexuality & The Media (1983-1996) • “Rare Cancer Seen in Homosexuals” wrote the New York Times in 1981. This is known as AIDS which sealed gay peoples fate as social outsiders. • Clinton’s compromise on the military. “Don’t ask, don’t tell.” This resulted from a man being murdered. • Colorado’s Amendment 2 stated that “Discrimination to gays was not the same as other minorities because gay people choose this lifestyle.” • Marriage was defined as a legal union of a man and women by the Defence of Marriage Act. Example of Homophobia • DharmanJeyasignham’s (2010) study: “Building Heterosexuality; the social and material reconstruction of men’s public toilets as spaces of heterosexuality.” • Homophobia is seen as deviant and immoral and because of this any closeness with another male is viewed as homosexual. • Men have taken this to the bathroom where in a public bathroom there is this unwritten rule that you cannot stand beside another man to pee if there is another urinal open. Heterogeneous Heterosexuality (1996-Present) • Many Men have oriented around the middle ground as to whether they are visually perceived as gay or straight through hair, clothing, voice and body language. • Metro-sexual emerged in 1994. The Metro-sexual man is defined by Mark Simpson as “ the single young man with a high disposable income, living or working in the city.” Source: Google Images
New Words For The Same Thing......... • After metrosexuality became these new terms to describe the close relationship between men that aren’t sexual. • Bromance= brother + romance • Man-date= men socializing together, like that a straight man would organise with a woman • Man-crush = when a man has a crush on another man in terms of idolising him but is not sexual • Murse= man purse Source: Google Images
Examples for Women? • Girl-crush= when a girl has a crush on another girl out of admiration and adoration that is not sexual. • Can Anyone think of any others? • Words to describe women’s relationships that are not sexual are not really heard of. • Can anyone think of why? Source: Google Images
