2. Rotary Founder Paul Harris In the beginning… • First Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905 by Paul P. Harris • Original club met for fellowship, in rotation, hence the name Rotary • Now 33,000 clubs with 1.2 million members

3. Motto: “Service Above Self” • There needed to be a purpose! • First project a public washroom in Chicago • Rotary became world’s 1st “service club” • 1910 - RC Winnipeg, Manitoba chartered and made Rotary International

4. Rotary Leadership • Rotary International governed by a President and Board of Directors elected from around the world • Each district annually selects a District Governor • Each Rotary Club is an autonomous group • Charters with 20 members

5. Rotary - an International Organization • Divided into 34 Zones • 529 Districts • 168 countries worldwide • Athabasca is in D5370 - covers northern Alberta, NW Saskatchewan, NE B.C. and N.W.T.

19. Rotary International • Volunteers in Action • Rotarians volunteer their time and expertise helping in foreign countries (all vocations) • Group Study Exchange – GSE • 4 to 6 non-Rotarians plus Rotarian leader on a 4 week exchange

20. Rotary FoundationWCS & Matching Grants • World Community Service • Rotarians provide humanitarian aid through matching grants • global fund and partnering with other clubs, worthy projects can receive matching grants to help finance various projects around the globe

21. Polio Plus • Largest project ever undertaken • Rotary’s global campaign to eradicate Polio • Contribution of more than $600 million

22. Rotary Foundation • World’s largest private philanthropic organization • Depends on fundraising and member donations • Paul Harris Fellowship • Many individuals will be helped • Building international relationships

24. Your Obligations in Rotary • Participation • to be a Rotarian you must give of your time and talents: • in community work • in social functions • in Club and District activities

25. Your Obligations in Rotary • Attendance • Weekly meetings • Goal 100% - Minimum 60% expected • Attending other club meetings, make-up through the internet, attending committee meetings or club events / work-bees

26. Your Obligations in Rotary • Financial • Annual Dues $150/yr • Meals $12/wk • Fines (Sergeant-at-Arms/Fun Tax) $30/yr • Social Events (Estimate) $100/yr Approximate figures only
