  2. DESIGN BRIEF • A design brief is a written statement of a problem or design task and a description of the parameters for solving the problem or completing the design task • Formats vary, but often include: • Scenario • Challenge • Materials • Limitations • Assessment criteria

  3. STEM Logo Design Brief Scenario You are at a workshop about STEM education and seated with educators from a variety of backgrounds. It is unclear if any of the participants have a similar understanding of STEM. In order to begin to talk about STEM, you will complete a task that requires collaboration with your table partners. You will have 5 minutes to complete the task. Challenge Collaborate with your table partners to write a definition of STEM and develop a simple STEM logo. Write the definition and sketch the logo. Materials Paper, markers, pencils… Limitations You must work collaboratively, with all table partners You have 5 minutes to complete the task Your definition may be no less than one (1) sentence and no more than three (3). Assessment Criteria A simple logo for STEM has been developed at sketched A 1-2 sentence definition of STEM has been written

  4. Learning Cycle: Each Building Block follows a 6E learning cycle that includes: (pre) Evaluate, Engage, Explain, Elaborate, and (post) Evaluate.

  5. Sequence of Lessons • (Pre) Evaluate • Formative pre-assessment strategy • Engage • Anticipatory hands-on activity • Introduction to design challenge • Read aloud to set environmental context • Real world research activity • Explore • Vocabulary strategy to introduce key terms • 5 hands on science/technology learning experiences with embedded mathematics instruction • Explain • STEM notebook check with a rubric and self-assessment • Writing strategy for conceptual understanding • Elaborate • Real world case study of researcher or inventor related to Grand Challenge • Learning experience to explore context/issue through real world data • Deliberate instruction in the technological design process • Teams develop and present solutions to design challenge • (Post) Evaluate • Summative assessment options

  6. Big Ideas • Kindergarten – A Home for All Seasons • Grade 1 – Agriculture Around Us • Grade 2 – Our Environment, Our Health • Grade 3 – Every Drop Matters • Grade 4 – The Power of Solar • Grade 5 - Community Connections Aligned with the 14 Grand Challenges of Engineering
