Introduction to safefood All-island body responsible for promotion of food safety on the island of Ireland
Take Away My Way all-Island Cookery Competition • Choose their favourite takeaway food, e.g. pizza, stir-fry, curry and modify the recipe to make it healthier! • Cook their modified dish, take a picture of it, complete the entry form and submit it with the picture either by post or e-mail. • The closing date for receipt of all entries is 5pm on 31 March 2011. Great student and teacher prizes to be won like game consoles, cook books and gift vouchers - you can find full details of the prizes on the competition website • In addition to the cookery competition, students are encouraged to take part in the optional Take Away My Way online video competition which we are running alongside the cookery competition? For the online competition, students are asked to: • choose their favourite takeaway dish • show how they can make it healthier • record a two minute ‘YouTube’ style video • upload and share the video to www.safefood.eu/takeawaymyway
safefood for Life – First step on Food industry ladder! • Food safety teaching resource • Taught by Home Economics/Science Teachers/ Youthreach Trainer. • Students 15-18 years • Trains students to a level which will allow them to work in food retail and catering establishments • Provides students with the opportunity to gain food safety certification • Online examination – Environmental Health Officers Association(EHOA) Accreditation
What you thought - feedback on safefood for life • Completed as part of the Youthreach summer programme • Slotted in well with HCT and Fetac Level 3 Food and Nutrition. • CD was user friendly, visuals worked well and interactive slides effective • Students felt online exam did not feel like normal exam environment • Great buzz when they received certificates • Exam demo and user guide useful • Literacy issue with student notes and questions –looking at Plain English proofing these • Issue with setting up the with online exam –internet connection.
Continued ….. • Completed as Summer Programme –an appropriate time • Visuals and Interactive aspects– provided fun learning. • Literacy issue– with student notes and some exam questions. • Teachers notes were useful and online exam was popular with students • Used to supplement Hotel Catering and Tourism (HCT) part of LCA and Fetac Level 1- 4 Food and Nutrition • 5 year cert was good –some students may do programme again before they leave the Centre.
